Consumers' Costly Responses to Product-Harm Crises

Summary: This paper utilizes a major food safety crisis to estimate a demand model for an unsafe product and its substitutes, revealing consumers' preference parameters for different product characteristics and the factors that influence their responses. The study finds that consumers' reactions are constrained by their preferences for observable and unobservable characteristics of the product, and that unobservable taste is a significant driver of consumers' responses. Therefore, managerial strategies should take into account how different demand drivers affect consumers' substitution patterns.

Body Mass Index and Arterial Stiffness Are Associated With Greater Beat-to-Beat Blood Pressure Variability After Transient Ischemic Attack or Minor Stroke

Summary: The study found that blood pressure variability between heartbeats is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, but the underlying causes are unclear. The results showed that vascular aging manifested as arterial stiffness is a strong determinant of increased blood pressure variability, and weight loss may help reduce blood pressure variability and cardiovascular event risk.

The sustainable and healthy diet developed can help alleviate the burden on people's livelihoods, food security, and health.

Beat-to-beat dynamic regulation of intracellular pH in cardiomyocytes

Summary: This study investigates the regulation of pH(i) in cardiomyocytes and finds a correlation between cardiac contractions and pH(i) transients. The pH(i) transients are influenced by various factors, including pacing rate, transporters, buffering capacity, and β-adrenergic signaling. Mitochondrial activity plays a role in pH(i) regulation, and a decrease in pH(i) may act as a negative feedback to cardiac contractions.

Spontaneous beat synchronization in rats: Neural dynamics and motor entrainment

Summary: This study examined beat sensitivity in rats and found that they displayed prominent beat synchronization and activities in the auditory cortex within 120 to 140 BPM. Mathematical modeling revealed that short-term adaptation underlies this beat tuning. The findings suggest that the optimal tempo for beat synchronization is determined by the time constant of neural dynamics, rather than the species-specific time constant of physical movements.

Anticipating food price crises by reservoir computing

Summary: Anticipating price crises in the market of agri-commodities is challenging due to the analysis of small and volatile time series influenced by external factors. This paper demonstrates that suitable reservoir computing algorithms can outperform traditional approaches in forecasting by reducing the Mean Absolute Error and improving the Market Direction Accuracy. The decomposing of time series and using separate RC models for each component are found to be essential in successfully predicting price trends, even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Evaluation of crises suitability of food systems: a comparison of alternative protein sources

Summary: Global crises affecting food security have been increasing for four consecutive years, and it is estimated that nearly 350 million people will suffer from food insecurity in 2023, more than double the number in 2020. This research developed criteria to compare the suitability of food systems for crisis situations, and identified insects and cultured meat as the most suitable alternatives to replace chicken meat. Other alternative protein sources such as algae, mycoproteins, and plant proteins could complement chicken meat if integrated into the food supply.

In response, a model is developed to demonstrate the four dimensions through which self-organised collectives create strategic value. This model helps reveal their specific capabilities and provides implications for theory, while also outlining an agenda for future research.

Summary: Research on the use of gene drive mosquitoes in malaria elimination shows that gene drive mosquitoes with highly efficient X-shredder function, low fertility cost, and low deployment cost can effectively eliminate malaria and are the most cost-effective intervention. Suppression gene drive could also be a cost-effective supplemental intervention for malaria elimination, but constraints on drive effectiveness and cost ceilings may limit its feasibility.

Assessment of land degradation 'on the ground' and from 'above'

Summary: Assessments of land degradation in Eastern Africa were conducted using remote sensing technology and ground-level evaluations. The results showed varying degrees of land degradation in Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, and Kenya between 1982 and 2016, with certain hot spot areas identified. Ground-truthing was carried out to validate the accuracy of the NDVI observations.

Impact of community-based health insurance on utilisation of preventive health services in rural Uganda: a propensity score matching approach
