In Argentina the Yungas forests are among the ecosystems most affected by human activity, with loss of biodiversity. To assess the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) spore numbers in these ecosystems, the roots of the most dominant native plants (one tree, Alnus acuminata; three herbaceous, Duchesnea indica, Oxalis conorrhiza, Trifolium aff. repens, and one shrub, Sambucus peruviana) were studied throughout the year from two sites of Yungas forests. Assessments of mycorrhizal colonization (percent root length, intraradical structures) were made by washing and staining the roots. Soil samples of each plant species were pooled and subsamples were obtained to determine AM spore numbers. The herbaceous species formed both Arum- and Paris-type morphologies, whereas the tree and the shrub species formed respectively single structural types of Arum- and Paris-type. AM colonization, intraradical fungi structures and AMF spore numbers displayed variation in species, seasons and sites. D. indica showed the highest AM colonization, whereas the highest spore numbers was observed in the rhizosphere of: A. acuminata. No correlation was observed between spore numbers and root length percentage colonized by AM fungi. Results of this Study showed that Alnus acuminata is facultatively AM. The AM colonization, intraradical fungi structures and AMF spore numbers varied in species depending on phenological, climatic and edaphic conditions.

Soil infectivity and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi communities in four urban green sites in central Argentina

Paula A. Buil, Daniel Renison, Alejandra G. Becerra

Summary: The study evaluated the AMF community composition and soil infectivity in urban sites with different disturbance levels and management histories in Cordoba, Argentina. The results showed that AMF communities were dominated by generalist species that are resilient to harsh environmental conditions. Urban forests had higher richness, diversity, and soil infectivity compared to parklands, with plant diversity, tree cover dominance, and soil compaction playing key roles in shaping AMF communities.

The Combined Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Compost Improves Growth and Soil Parameters and Decreases Cadmium Absorption in Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) Plants

Summary: This study demonstrates the synergistic effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and organic amendment on the growth of cocoa plants in Cd-contaminated soil. The combination treatment of AMF inoculation and compost application showed the greatest plant growth and reduced Cd uptake by cocoa plants. Additionally, this treatment improved soil properties by increasing pH, organic matter, and available phosphorus content.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the multiplication of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) spores isolated from cocoa farms. It found that rice was a suitable host crop for multiplying AMF spores effectively, providing a potential method for massive propagation of AMF.

Sustainable strategies for management of the false root-knot nematode Nacobbus spp.

Paola Lax, Maria A. Passone, Alejandra G. Becerra, Ana L. Sosa, Aurelio Ciancio, Mariella M. Finetti-Sialer, Laura C. Rosso

Summary: The genus Nacobbus, a type of nematode found in the Americas, can cause significant economic losses on major food crops and is subject to strict quarantine legislation. However, the management of Nacobbus spp. remains unsatisfactory due to lack of information on its life cycle, detection methods, and resistant plant genotypes. This review focuses on environmentally benign treatments for Nacobbus spp., including biological control strategies and other eco-compatible approaches. Potential sources of resistance for genetic improvement are also discussed. These sustainable strategies not only help combat the pathogen, but also improve crop health and growth.

Summary: This study reported the presence of AMF in bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) in the Punta Lara Natural Reserve in Argentina. AMF structures including hyphae, vesicles, spores, and sporocarps were found in mosses and liverworts. These findings provide new insights for further investigation into the diversity, physiology, and significance of these associations.

Summary: This study examined the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytic fungi (DSE) in three metal accumulator plants growing in soils with high Pb content. The results showed that mycorrhizal variables and DSE colonization increased with increasing soil Pb contamination, but AMF diversity and richness decreased.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the algae and Cyanobacteria community in the rhizosphere of plants capable of accumulating lead in Cordoba province, and evaluate the impact of lead on their composition. It was found that lead negatively affects the species richness of algae and Cyanobacteria in contaminated soils, leading to the identification of tolerant and non-tolerant communities based on species composition.
