Background The influence of pregnancy on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has been extensively studied but such influence on Latin American women with MS has not been characterized. Our objective was to describe the course of pregnancy and birth outcome in Argentinean MS patients and the evolution of MS during pregnancy and after delivery. Method We used a retrospective design in eight MS centers in Argentina and administered a survey to women with definite MS (Mc Donald) with pregnancies during or after MS onset. We contacted 355 women of which 81 met inclusion criteria. We recorded 141 pregnancies. Results Involuntary abortion was observed in 16% of pregnancies (95% CI = 10-23). Thirty five women received immunomodulatory therapy (IMT) before 42 pregnancies. Twenty three (55%) out of 42 pregnancies were exposed to IMT. The mean time of IMT discontinuation before conception in 19 (45.2%) pregnancies without exposure, was 104 days (95% CI = 61.0-147.0). There were 103 deliveries: 79% full term. Birth defects were detected in 19% of pregnancies exposed to IMT (95% CI = 4-46) and in 2% of non-exposed (95% CI = 0.3-8.0). The mean relapse rate was: pre-pregnancy year: 0.22 (95% CI = 0.12-0.32); pregnancy: 0.31 in 1st (95% CI = 0.10-0.52), 0.19 (95% CI = 0.03-0.36) in 2nd, and 0.04 in 3rd trimester (95% CI = -0.04-0.12); 1st trimester post delivery: 0.82 (95% CI = 0.42-1.22). Conclusion We observed a higher rate of birth defects among infants exposed to immunomodulators in utero than those not exposed. The reduction in MS relapses during 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy and its increase during postpartum is consistent with previous reports. Conservation state of two paintings in the Santa Margherita cliff cave: role of the environment and of the microbial community

Francesco Armetta, Josue Cardenas, Eugenio Caponetti, Rosa Alduina, Alessandro Presentato, Luca Vecchioni, Pietro di Stefano, Alberto Spinella, Maria Luisa Saladino

Summary: This study conducted monitoring of environmental conditions in Santa Margherita's cave in Italy and found that degradation of ancient paintings in the cave was mainly influenced by exposure to sea aerosol, affecting salt composition and bacterial community diversity. Specific actions for conservation and restoration of the paintings and preservation of the site were suggested.

Archaeometric study of execution techniques of white Attic vases: the case of the Perseus crater in Agrigento

Gabriella Chirco, Monica de Cesare, Giacomo Chiari, Sarah Maass, Maria Luisa Saladino, Delia Francesca Chillura Martino

Summary: This article introduces a white ground ceramic exhibited in the Pietro Griffo Archaeological Museum in Agrigento, Italy, dating back to 450-440 BC. The vase depicts two scenes from the Perseus myth. The study conducted non-destructive and non-invasive investigations, revealing the use of gypsum as the material for the white ground, which is an important finding for similar vases.

Functionalization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles through one-pot co-condensation in w/o emulsion

Alessandro Gottuso, Francesco Armetta, Alessio Cataldo, Viviana Mollica Nardo, Francesco Parrino, Maria Luisa Saladino

Summary: In this study, three different functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized through co-condensation in oil/water emulsion, using various organo-substituted silica precursors. The influence of different pendant groups and their concentrations on the mesostructured pore organization of the nanoparticles was evaluated using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. Results showed that bulky aliphatic C16 chains, especially in higher concentrations, led to significant changes in mesoporous structure.

The colours of Segesta. Searching for the traces of the lost pigments

Veronica Ciaramitaro, Francesco Armetta, Monica de Cesare, Maria Luisa Saladino

Summary: The analysis and identification of color traces found in architectural elements and artifacts from the Archeological Park of Segesta (Trapani, Italy) were conducted using various non-invasive techniques. The study identified several pigments, including hematite, umber, vegetable black, and bone black. Despite the limited amount of detectable pigment, the investigation provided insight into the ancient civilizations and allowed for a glimpse into the past.

Francesco Armetta, Vitalii Boiko, Dariusz Hreniak, Rosina C. Ponterio, Maria Luisa Saladino

Summary: A method was developed to prepare luminescent inks of YPO4:Eu dispersions with PVA. YPO4:Eu nanoparticles were prepared by precipitation and hydrothermal treatment. The process included systematic studies on preparing stable colloidal system, investigating the parameters affecting its stability and UV-excited YPO4:Eu emission intensity. The interaction responsible for the dispersion stability was also investigated.

Role of the thermal treatment on the microstructure of YAGG nanopowders prepared by urea glass route

Francesco Armetta, Mattia Gaboardi, Jasper Plaisier, Maria Luisa Saladino

Summary: Yttrium aluminium gallium garnet (YAGG) doped with rare-earth ions has been synthesized via the urea glass route followed by thermal treatment. The formation of the garnet was studied in situ using synchrotron powder diffraction. The results show that the onset of formation of the garnet is about 860 degrees C, with comparable cell parameters for both undoped and doped YAGG. A possible growth mechanism of YAGG is discussed based on observed microstructural parameters.
