Nearly one-third of the world's energy consumption and 36% of its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are attributable to manufacturing industries. However, the adoption of advanced technologies already in commercial use could provide technical energy savings in industry of 27-41 exajoules (EJ), along with a reduction in CO2 emissions of 2.2-3.2 gigatonnes (Gt) per year, about 7-12% of today's global CO2 emissions. Even more significant savings can be attained on the supply side if fuel switching and CO2 capture and storage are considered. However, such changes Must start in the coming decade to have a substantial impact by 2050.

Decarbonising heat with optimal PV and storage investments: A detailed sector coupling modelling framework with flexible heat pump operation

Arthur Rinaldi, Martin Christoph Soini, Kai Streicher, Martin K. Patel, David Parra

Summary: This paper examines the optimal electricity investments for decarbonizing heat supply in residential buildings in Switzerland through a detailed representation of the power and heating system. It finds that heat pumps not only decarbonize heat but also provide additional flexibility to the power system. The study also shows that energy retrofitting rates have a significant impact on storage investments with increasing heat pump deployment.

Decarbonizing heat with PV-coupled heat pumps supported by electricity and heat storage: Impacts and trade-offs for prosumers and the grid

Alejandro Pena-Bello, Philipp Schuetz, Matthias Berger, Jorg Worlitschek, Martin K. Patel, David Parra

Summary: The study found that using heat storage can reduce the cost of meeting electricity demand, especially when heat pumps are used for both space heating and domestic hot water. Both battery and hot water tank storage technologies achieved similar rates of total self-consumption, but batteries were more effective in reducing peak demand. The quality of the building's thermal envelope plays a key role in system performance, and policy makers should promote thermal retrofitting of the building stock to avoid grid upgrades.

Techno-economic comparison of technology options for deep decarbonization and electrification of residential heating.

M. J. S. Zuberi, J. Chambers, M. K. Patel

Summary: This study provides detailed information on key technologies using renewables for decarbonization and electrification in the residential heating sector. The most viable option in the context is a rapid shift to electrification via decentralized heat pumps or small-scale thermal energy networks utilizing cheap local resources. Replacing natural gas boilers with electrification technologies can significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and government policy interventions are urgently needed to accelerate the energy transition.

Pay now, save later: Using insights from behavioural economics to commit consumers to environmental sustainability

Jasmin Mahmoodi, Martin K. Patel, Tobias Brosch

Summary: Immediate rewards may not be as effective commitment devices as perceived, while delayed penalties can better incentivize consumers to conserve electricity at home. Individual differences, such as loss aversion and temporal discounting, can influence consumer choices of electricity products.

Geospatial global sensitivity analysis of a heat energy service decarbonisation model of the building stock

Jonathan Chambers, M. J. S. Zuberi, K. N. Streicher, Martin K. Patel

Summary: This study develops a model for heating energy decarbonisation in Western Switzerland using a high spatial resolution techno-economic model. Through global sensitivity analysis, it was found that heating energy services provided by retrofits, decentralised heat pumps, and thermal networks can achieve reductions in final energy demand ranging from 70-80% and emissions reductions of 90%. Sensitivities were high with respect to efficiency parameters, with costs and sensitivities showing a strong correlation with building density.

Using energy saving deficit distributions to assess calculated, deemed and metered electricity savings estimations

Thomas M. M. Guibentif, Martin K. Patel, Selin Yilmaz

Summary: This study proposes a simple methodology to assess the accuracy of energy savings estimations in energy efficiency programmes, identifying the issue of overestimation arising from calculation errors and rebound effects, as well as finding suitable methods for quantitative monitoring.

Shallow geothermal energy potential for heating and cooling of buildings with regeneration under climate change scenarios

Alina Walch, Xiang Li, Jonathan Chambers, Nahid Mohajeri, Selin Yilmaz, Martin Patel, Jean-Louis Scartezzini

Summary: This paper proposes a new approach to quantify the technical potential of shallow ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) and estimate the useful energy for building energy demands at a regional scale. The results suggest that GSHPs can cover a significant portion of heating and cooling demand in Switzerland and provide valuable information for decision making on the installation of GSHPs in strategic areas.

Decarbonization strategies for Switzerland considering embedded greenhouse gas emissions in electricity imports

Martin Rudisuli, Elliot Romano, Sven Eggimann, Martin K. Patel

Summary: Decarbonizing the energy system through electrification of heat and transport is only effective with low-carbon electricity sources. However, the greenhouse gas content of imported electricity must be accurately accounted for as many countries rely on imports. This study examines the implications on greenhouse gas emissions for various electricity demand and supply scenarios, and finds that a diversified electricity generation portfolio can lead to substantial GHG mitigation.

Selin Yilmaz, Cedric Chanez, Peter Cuony, Martin Kumar Patel

Summary: This study investigates the acceptance and preferences of DLC programs for heat pumps and electric vehicles (EV) offered by a local DSO in Switzerland. The study finds that acceptance varied among different socio-economic groups, with financial incentives being the most preferred attribute. Preferences also vary among different classes, gender, and employment groups.

Impact of energy efficiency and decarbonisation policies for buildings: A comparative assessment of Austria and Switzerland

K. Narula, C. Ploiner, G. Getzinger, M. K. Patel

Summary: This paper presents a comparative assessment of energy efficiency policies for heat demand reduction and heat decarbonisation in the buildings sector of Austria and Switzerland. The assessment reveals the need for significant increase in renewable heat supply and the challenges involved. Energy savings from energy efficiency improvements are largely offset by activity and wealth effects. Austria relies more on public subsidies for heating, while Switzerland focuses on leveraging private investment to achieve similar energy savings.
