Summary: Apathy in Parkinson's disease often coexists with depression and anxiety, with pure apathy being rare. Patients with mood disorders perform worse in non-verbal intellectual functioning, while those with apathy do not show additional cognitive losses. This suggests that apathy in PD may be primarily an epiphenomenon of mood disorder.

Summary: Apathy, depression, and anxiety are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a follow-up study was conducted on a large sample of patients, revealing a significant increase in apathy but not in depression or anxiety. The impact of COVID-19 was correlated with anxiety and depression but not with apathy.

Summary: The frequency of fatigue in early Parkinson's disease patients slightly changed over a 3-year follow-up period, with patterns similar to anxiety. Fatigue was significantly associated with nocturnal sleep disorders, high Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale score, and high Unified PD Rating Scale III score. High baseline UPDRS III score increased the risk of developing fatigue after 1 year, while high LEDD and HAMA score increased the risk after 3 years.

Summary: This study found that dopaminergic dysfunction in the midbrain is associated with motivational symptoms such as apathy and anhedonia in Parkinson's disease (PD), and this association becomes evident as the disease progresses. These findings can inform intervention strategies for improving the treatment of PD patients.

Summary: Apathy and impulsiveness are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson disease. This study aimed to investigate the presence of these symptoms, as well as other neuropsychiatric symptoms, in Parkinson disease patients. The results show that education and depression are important predictors of impulsiveness and apathy. This study highlights the importance of apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease and suggests that future research should explore the role of other variables.

Summary: This study investigates the multidimensional pattern of apathy in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) using the Apathy Motivation Index (AMI), which explores behavioral, emotional, and social aspects of apathy. The results show that individuals with PD exhibit higher levels of behavioral and social apathy, but lower levels of emotional apathy. The study also demonstrates the connection between apathy and other non-motor comorbidities such as depression and anxiety. The findings highlight the importance of considering apathy as a multidimensional construct in clinical and research settings.

Summary: The study found that higher baseline physical activity in early PD patients was associated with younger age, lower MDS-UPDRS motor scores, smaller levodopa equivalent daily dose, better attention and memory scores, and better quality of life. Additionally, it was revealed that higher baseline physical activity was associated with decreased anxiety and apathy scores at 1-year follow-up.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are common and significantly impact quality of life in Parkinson's disease. Current management strategies need to address both motor and psychiatric symptoms, but there is a lack of randomized controlled trials for pharmacological treatment of anxiety and nonpharmacological interventions have not shown efficacy.

Summary: This study explored the prevalence and patterns of multimorbidity in a general population of middle-aged Australian adults, finding that multimorbidity is common, associated with factors like age, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and family history of certain conditions. Specific patterns of multimorbidity, such as the co-occurrence of arthritis, bowel disease, and depression-anxiety, were identified and may provide insights into shared causes of co-occurring conditions in aging individuals.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored video self-modeled DVD-HEP in improving functional mobility, physical activity, exercise self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life in frail older adults. The results showed significant improvements in functional mobility, balance, gait speed, exercise self-efficacy, and physical activity participation compared to baseline. The study suggests that personalized video self-modeled programs can be an effective rehabilitation approach for older adults.

Summary: The study investigated temporal changes in mobility in community-based individuals with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that almost one-quarter of the participants experienced clinically relevant mobility impairment that persisted or worsened over six years and was associated with late withdrawals and deaths. The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test may have important clinical utility in assessing mobility and its consequences in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether undetected thyroid disease increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and death in people with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that subclinical hypothyroidism was not independently associated with CVD events or mortality in community-dwelling people with type 2 diabetes, despite its associations with CVD risk factors.
