The pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD) is not confined to the brainstem regions, but spreads to involve the neocortical areas. Using surface-based cortical thickness analysis, we studied the topographical distribution of cortical thinning in nondemented patients with mild PD. The high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were performed in 48 patients with PD without dementia and 56 age-matched healthy controls. Using the Freesurfer software, surface-based analysis was done to find changes in cerebral cortical thickness in patients with PD. Compared to the controls, patients with PD showed significant cortical thinning in the temporal, inferior parietal, rostral frontal, and orbitofrontal cortical areas. Thinning of the cerebral cortex occurs even in nondemented patients with mild PD, and its topographical distribution was similar to that of the neocortical Lewy bodies. Further studies are needed to find pathological and clinical correlates of thinned cerebral cortex found in nondemented patients with mild PD. (C) 2010 Movement Disorder Society

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic performance of susceptibility map-weighted imaging (SMwI) using different MRI machines with N-3-fluoropropyl-2-beta-carbomethoxy-3-beta-(4-iodophenyl)nortropane (F-18-FP-CIT) PET in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative parkinsonism. The results showed that SMwI had a high diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and there was no significant difference between the results of SMwI and F-18-FP-CIT PET. The study demonstrated the generalisability of SMwI for determining nigrostriatal degeneration in patients with parkinsonism in a multi-centre setting.

Regional A13-tau interactions promote onset and acceleration of Alzheimer's disease tau

Wha Jin Lee, Jesse A. Brown, Hye Ryun Kim, Renaud La Joie, Hanna Cho, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Gil D. Rabinovici, Joon-Kyung Seong, William W. Seeley

Summary: This study identified two interactions between amyloid-beta and tau associated with the onset and propagation of tau spreading in living humans, addressing long-standing questions regarding the topographical dissimilarity between early amyloid-beta and tau deposition.

Decreased thalamic monoamine availability in drug-induced parkinsonism

Yoon-Sang Oh, Sang-Won Yoo, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Joong-Seok Kim

Summary: Drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) is a major cause of misdiagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and is characterized by a dopamine receptor blockade. This study found that monoamine availability in the thalamus was lower in DIP patients compared to healthy controls and similar to that of early PD patients, suggesting that this could be an imaging biomarker of DIP.

Annual Trends in the Incidence and Prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease in South Korea: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Korea, utilizing data from the National Health Insurance System. It found a gradual increase in AD among the Korean population aged 40 years and older, with the highest increase observed in older age groups. Interestingly, individuals with hypertension or dyslipidemia were found to have lower prevalence of AD in recent years. Efforts toward early diagnosis and modification of underlying risks may be key in reducing the socioeconomic burden of AD.

Role of Enlarged Perivascular Space in the Temporal Lobe in Cerebral Amyloidosis

Han Kyu Na, Han-Kyeol Kim, Hye Sun Lee, Mina Park, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Hanna Cho, Chul Hyoung Lyoo

Summary: By studying 272 participants with MRI and PET scans, we found that a high degree of temporal lobe perivascular space (EPVS) is associated with a higher likelihood of amyloid positivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This finding suggests that impaired perivascular drainage may be related to cerebral amyloidosis.

Summary: In this study, the visibility of NG1 in SMwI was found to be associated with the degree of nigrostriatal degeneration in PD patients. It was concluded that SMwI can be used for diagnosing PD only after the onset of motor symptoms.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Striatal Dopamine Availability in Parkinson's Disease

Yoon-Sang Oh, Joong-Seok Kim, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Hosung Kim

Summary: This study found that Parkinson's disease patients with obstructive sleep apnea had significantly lower dopamine availability in the caudate nucleus compared to those without obstructive sleep apnea. This association was more pronounced in female patients. However, there was no difference in dopamine availability in other structures (putamen, globus pallidus, thalamus) between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to explore subtypes of early Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with cardiac sympathetic denervation and their characteristics. The results showed an association between cardiac denervation subtypes and presynaptic dopamine transporter densities in PD patients. The study also observed an association between cardiac catecholamine capacity and cognition in PD patients.

Exploring the link between essential tremor and Parkinson's disease

Sang-Won Yoo, Seunggyun Ha, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Yuna Kim, Ji-Yeon Yoo, Joong-Seok Kim

Summary: This study explores the interaction between essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD), finding that patients with PD preceded by ET may exhibit different characteristics from those with pure ET or PD. Patients with PD preceded by ET show typical striatal pathology, but with a delay in noradrenergic impairment. ET patients have similar patterns of presynaptic dopamine transporter deficits as PD patients.

Prediction of Microsatellite Instability in Colorectal Cancer Using a Machine Learning Model Based on PET/CT Radiomics

Soyoung Kim, Jae-Hoon Lee, Eun Jung Park, Hye Sun Lee, Seung Hyuk Baik, Tae Joo Jeon, Kang Young Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Jeonghyun Kang

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using preoperative 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/ computed tomography (CT) radiomics with machine learning to predict microsatellite instability (MSI) status in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. A predictive model incorporating PET radiomic features, called rad_score, was established and evaluated for its ability to predict MSI status. The rad_score showed similar predictive performance in both the training and test sets, and it was found to be an independent predictor of MSI status in CRC. Furthermore, the rad_score outperformed conventional PET parameters in predicting MSI status.
