Since palladium (Pd) is now increasingly used in modern industry, it progressively accumulates in the environment, especially in aquatic ecosystem. The potential toxicity of Pd has therefore caused extensive concern worldwidely. In the present study, we investigated the toxic effect of Pd on zebrafish development. Acute Pd exposure significantly decreased both the survival rate (LC50: 292.6 mu g/L, viz. 2.75 mu M) and hatching rate (IC50: 181.5 mu g/L, viz. 1.71 mu M) of zebrafish during embryonic development. The most common developmental defect observed in Pd treated embryos is pericardiac edema, which occurs in a dose-dependent manner. Whole mount immunostaining and histological studies revealed that Pd exposure would produce the elongated, string-like heart. The heartbeat rate of zebrafish embryos was also decreased after Pd exposure. Consistently, mRNA expression levels of several cardiac-related genes were affected by Pd, suggesting a potential molecular mechanism of Pd-induced cardiac malformation of zebrafish embryo. Moreover, similar to other metals, Pd exposure resulted in the elevated expression of general metal-inducible genes. It was also found that the expression of several antioxidant enzymes was significantly down-regulated in the presence of Pd. Taken together, our study investigated the effects of Pd on zebrafish embryonic development and its potential molecular mechanisms, paving the way for the full understanding of Pd toxicity. Discovery of Cladonema multiramosum sp. nov. (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Cladonematidae) using DNA barcoding and life cycle analyses

Konglin Zhou, Yuping Gu, Lu Wang, Jianming Chen

Summary: This study confirms a new species of Cladonema, named Cladonema multiramosum sp. nov., discovered in a laboratory aquarium in Fuzhou, China, through morphological and molecular analyses. The distinctive features of the Cladonema multiramosum sp. nov. medusa differentiate it from other congeners, although the species also exhibits significant phenotypic plasticity, hindering species identification solely based on morphology. Therefore, a re-evaluation of the taxonomy within the genus Cladonema is necessary, with further revision expected based on additional information on the life cycle and DNA barcoding.

Deciphering pH-dependent microbial taxa and functional gene co-occurrence in the coral Galaxea fascicularis

Zhenyue Lin, Xinqing Zheng, Jianming Chen

Summary: This study investigates the response of the coral microbiome to oceanic pH changes caused by anthropogenic climate change. The results show that both ocean acidification and alkalization disrupt the functional cores of the microbiome, affecting the carbon cycling and health of the coral holobiont. While bacterial species richness does not vary significantly among pH treatments, the community compositions show significant differences. Seawater alkalization leads to a stronger taxonomic shift and an increase in pathogens compared to acidification. The study highlights the importance of understanding the functional ecological role of the microbiome in coral resilience.

Curcumin Supplementation Enhances the Feeding and Growth of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) Fed the Diet Containing 80 g/kg Fish Meal

Li Wang, Anlan Yu, Cong Yu, Umar Bashir Ibrahim, Jianming Chen, Yan Wang

Summary: Two feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the influence of dietary curcumin level on fish meal replacement with poultry by-product (PBM) in a largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) diet. The results showed that the replacement of fish meal with PBM significantly affected feed intake, phosphorus retention efficiency (PRE), body lipid content, the ratio of fish meal consumption to fish production (RCP), and carbon and phosphorus wastes. However, weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), nitrogen and energy retention efficiencies (NRE and ERE), and body composition remained unchanged. Overall, the minimum dietary fish meal level for largemouth bass could be dropped to 80 g/kg when PBM was used as an alternative ingredient, and 10000 mg/kg curcumin could obviously improve the growth of fish fed diet containing 80 g/kg fish meal.

Interactions between arsenic migration and CH4 emission in a soil bioelectrochemical system under the effect of zero-valent iron

Zhenyue Lin, Liuying Wang, Mingyu Luo, Xiaofeng Yi, Jianming Chen, Yuanpeng Wang

Summary: This study investigated the potential effects of zero-valent iron (ZVI) on the interactions between soil arsenic migration and methane emission using a bioelectrochemical system. The results showed that ZVI efficiently immobilized dissolved arsenic and increased methane production. Gene quantification and bacterial community analysis revealed that ZVI changed the spatial distribution of electroactive microorganisms, leading to a decrease in dissimilatory As/Fe-reducing bacteria and an increase in aceticlastic methanogens, which dominated methane production and arsenic immobilization. Additionally, coprecipitation with ferric iron contributed a significant portion of the dissolved arsenic.
