A sample of completely isolated S0 galaxies has been studied by means of long-slit spectroscopy at the Russian 6-m telescope. Seven of 12 galaxies have revealed the presence of extended ionized-gas discs whose rotation is mostly decoupled from the stellar kinematics. Five of these seven (71 +/- 17 per cent) galaxies show a visible counterrotation of the ionized-gas component with respect to the stellar component. The emission-line diagnostics demonstrates a wide range of gas excitation mechanisms, although pure excitation by young stars is rare. We conclude that in all cases the extended gaseous discs in our sample S0s are of external origin, despite the visible isolation of the galaxies. Possible sources of external accretion, such as systems of dwarf gas-rich satellites or cosmological cold-gas filaments, are discussed.

Summary: In this study, we reported the results of optical spectroscopy of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant and its associated high-mass X-ray binary using the Southern African Large Telescope. Analysis of the SNR shell expansion velocity indicated it is in the radiative phase, potentially ionized by OB stars. Our findings suggest the SNR may have resulted from a supernova explosion within a bubble produced by the stellar wind, with an estimated age of less than or equal to 10,000 years.

Summary: The study reveals the complex internal dynamics and low star formation efficiency in gLSBGs galaxies, which may be related to three formation scenarios: two-stage formation, extended dark matter halo, and major merger.

Two interacting galaxies hiding as one, revealed by MaNGA

Summary: Studying galaxy interactions and merger events, as well as the underlying mechanisms, is crucial for understanding galaxy evolution. This study identifies a merging galaxy with two counter-rotating discs along the line of sight, suggesting a pre-coalescence stage of a merger. The results highlight the importance of a multi-component approach in studying ambiguous systems.

The Impact of Low-luminosity AGNs on Their Host Galaxies: A Radio and Optical Investigation of the Kiloparsec-scale Outflow in MaNGA 1-166919

Summary: In this paper, the authors analyze the recent observations of MaNGA 1-166919 and find that the biconical outflow in this galaxy is powered by a low-luminosity, low Eddington ratio AGN. The shock produced by the AGN ejecting material into the interstellar medium generates hot, ionized gas and relativistic particles. The energetics of the relativistic and ionized gas material at this shock are comparable, with the mass outflow and kinetic power of the ionized gas higher than other AGNs with similar bolometric luminosities.

Star formation in outer rings of S0 galaxies IV. NGC 254: A double-ringed S0 with gas counter-rotation

Ivan Yu Katkov, Alexei Yu Kniazev, Olga K. Sil'chenko, Damir Gasymov

Summary: The study reveals the presence of ring structures in interstellar matter in S0 galaxies, which differ from star formation in spiral galaxies. Observations of NGC 254 show that the interstellar gas counter-rotates with respect to the stars, indicating an external origin. The gas is believed to have originated from a gas-rich galaxy merger with a retrograde orbit. The counter-rotating gas fuels star formation in two rings within the galaxy. Approximately 1% of the stars in situ are formed from the counter-rotating gas.

Transforming gas-rich low-mass disky galaxies into ultra-diffuse galaxies by ram pressure

Kirill A. Grishin, Igor V. Chilingarian, Anton V. Afanasiev, Daniel Fabricant, Ivan Yu. Katkov, Sean Moran, Masafumi Yagi

Summary: Up to 40% of ultra-diffuse galaxies could have formed via stripping of material by ram pressure. A study on low-mass post-starburst galaxies in the Coma and Abell 2147 clusters shows ubiquitous marks of ram-pressure stripping and recent star formation, with most of them evolving into ultra-diffuse galaxies in the next 10 Gyr. These galaxies exhibit rotating stellar disks containing a high percentage of dark matter, with a large fraction of disk stars formed in intense star bursts triggered by ram pressure, as evidenced by global gradients of stellar age.

Summary: We present reprocessed flux-calibrated spectra of 406 stars from the UVES-POP stellar library, which can be used for stellar population synthesis. The spectra have two versions with different spectral resolving powers. The raw spectra were re-reduced using the latest version of the UVES data reduction pipeline with additional algorithms, resulting in significant improvements compared to the original release.
