Summary: In this study, the selective production of Tyrian purple from sea snails by the bacterial strain GS-2 was observed. The strain was identified as Providencia rettgeri, and an indole degradation gene cluster in the strain was found to contribute to the biosynthesis of Tyrian purple. The study also identified the catechol pathway as the mechanism for indole biodegradation in Providencia rettgeri.

Summary: In a study examining dyeing technologies in the Timna textiles collection, three samples of prestigious fibers dyed with murex sea snail were identified. Analysis of the components and comparison with controlled dyeing experiments shed light on the ancient dyeing technology. These samples from a Iron Age copper smelting site provide insights into social stratification, elite fashion, trade connections, and technological capabilities in the region during the early Iron Age.

Summary: In this study, pigments with a more reddish color were synthesized by partially replacing manganese with cobalt and aluminum with lanthanum and cerium using a heating method. The obtained samples were evaluated for their chemical composition, hue, acid and base resistances, and hiding power. Among the samples examined, the Co/Mn/La/P system showed the most vivid colors. Brighter and redder samples were obtained by prolonged heating. Prolonged heating also improved the acid and base resistance of the samples. Finally, substituting manganese for cobalt improved the hiding power.

Summary: Tyrian purple, the oldest commercial pigment, remains one of the most expensive dyes, associated with clergy and royalty; Indigo, used since 4000 BC, has therapeutic value and can be synthesized with a simple enzymatic method; The development of gentle preparation methods for indigoids from simple precursors is of interest to dyestuff manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry, with potential applications in both fields.

Summary: In this study, a [6,6] hollow bilayer cylindrical nanoring (HBCNR) was synthesized from a planar macrocycle via a Diels-Alder and Yamamoto coupling reaction. The fluorescence quantum yield of HBCNR was found to be Phi(F) = 52%, which is four times higher than its precursor. Theoretical studies also simulated the hollow nanoring configuration and estimated the tension energy to be 47.1 kcal/mol.

Summary: A copper-catalyzed oxidative C(sp(3))-H/C(sp(3))-H cross-coupling reaction of methyl ketones and 3-methylbenzo-[c]isoxazoles has been developed for the direct synthesis of 3-oxoindolin-2-ylidene derivatives. This process involves an intermolecular nucleophilic addition/ring-opening/aza-Michael addition cascade, providing indigoid analogues with high atom economy and as single isomers exclusively under mild conditions.
