Summary: This study used acetone fractionation to increase the homogeneity of softwood kraft lignin and develop new products. The acetone soluble and insoluble fractions were analyzed for their elemental composition, chemical structure, and thermal properties. The acetone soluble fraction showed an increase of 24% in phenolic hydroxyl content. It was used to replace phenol in phenolic resin, resulting in a higher adhesion strength. The acetone insoluble fraction, on the other hand, was used to replace petroleum-based polyol in polyurethane resin, with the help of a bio-derived solvent. Tailoring the structure of kraft lignin through solvent fractionation allowed for the replacement of two major petrochemicals in resin formulations, which would otherwise be challenging due to the heterogeneity of softwood kraft lignin.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid phenolic resin containing silicon and boron was synthesized through addition-condensation reactions, resulting in improved residual weight at high temperatures. The hybrid resin achieved uniform dispersion of hybrid elements at the molecular level and addition curing via the presence of vinyl groups. Characterization using multiple techniques provided a detailed understanding of the synergistic effects of boron-silicon modified phenolic resin.

Summary: American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease) caused by Trypanosoma cruzi parasite is a severe health problem in Latin America, with reports of spreading to Europe, North America, Japan, and Australia. Lack of vaccine availability calls for discovery of new molecules for drug development. In this study, 26 compounds were synthesized to determine their effect on trypanocidal activity, with one compound showing promising results against a resistant strain of T. cruzi.

Summary: The effects of NBR polarity and organoclay addition on the properties of an NBR/phenolic resin blend were investigated. It was found that good distribution of nanoparticles and compatibility between NBR and phenolic resin improved the rheological and tensile properties. The addition of organoclay increased the tensile strength of the blends, while increasing nanoparticle concentration reduced the deterioration in tensile properties and Young's modulus.

Summary: The influence of temperature, furfural to acetone ratio, and catalyst loading on the furfural condensation with acetone over hydrotalcite materials was studied. Concentration profiles showed limiting conversion values depending on the catalyst amounts, and thermodynamic calculations demonstrated the absence of any thermodynamic restrictions, indicating catalyst deactivation, especially at lower catalyst concentrations. Deactivation is more likely to affect the first step of aldol condensation rather than subsequent dehydration. A kinetic model, including catalyst deactivation, was developed and confirmed an adequate description of the experimental data with the advanced model.

Summary: In this study, HBr was used as a catalyst to enhance the reactivity of lignin, which was then directly used to prepare phenolic foams without purification. Under optimized conditions, the phenolic hydroxyl content increased while the methoxyl group content dropped, leading to improved performance of the modified lignin-based phenolic resin compared to unmodified resin.

Summary: In this study, regio- and stereoselective nucleophilic addition reactions of Swaminathan ketone and its methylated analog were reported. Generic organometallic reagents were used to achieve selective additions at the conjugated carbonyl group, resulting in a range of tert-alcohol products with high stereoselectivity. Furthermore, the regioselectivity problem in the allylation reaction was solved using organocopper reagents.

Summary: The research demonstrated that the efficiency and stability of RFR in removing Cs-137 depend on the resorcinol/formaldehyde molar ratio and solidification temperature. The sample with the resorcinol/formaldehyde molar ratio of 1.8/2.2 and solidified at 210 degrees Celsius showed the best sorption-selective characteristics and chemical stability.

Summary: A high-yielding new route to substituted cycloparaphenylenes has been developed, demonstrating definite aggregation-induced emission properties. The synthesized compound is a novel AIE-active cycloarylene that differs from well-known AIE luminogens such as tetraphenylethene and 1,2,4,5-tetraphenylbenzene skeletons. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal highly ordered packing structures.

Summary: Multiple emission colors in solid-state organic fluorophores are important for improving light-emitting devices/materials. In this study, we synthesized two derivatives of di-bridged-distyrylbenzene that showed bright red-orange and red fluorescence in the solid state, respectively. The introduction of bridging structures and the suppression of intermolecular electronic interactions were responsible for the enhanced solid-state emissions.

Summary: This study aims to lower the isothermalization temperature (T-i) of poly(pentylene 4,4’-bibenzoate) (BB-5) and enhance the processability of poly(pentylene 4,4’-terphenyldicarboxylate) (T-5) compounds. Six fluorinated BB-5 (F-BB-5) compounds with T-i values at least 35°C lower than that of BB-5 are synthesized. Fluorinated T-5 (F-T-5) compounds exhibit isotropic phases before thermal decompositions, unlike T-5. Moreover, F-BB-5 and F-T-5 form unexpected crystalline and higher-order smectic phases, expanding the possibilities of low-molecular-weight liquid crystals.
