Detailed chemical investigation of the herb Sarcopyramis bodinieri var. delicate resulted in the isolation of two new flavonol glycosides, namely, isorhamnetin-3-O-(6 ''-O-E-feruloyl)- beta-D-glucopyranoside (1) and isorhamnetin-3-O-(6 ''-O-E-feruloyl)-beta-D-galactopyranoside (2). In addition, four known compounds, quercetin-3-O-(6 ''-acetyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), isorhamnetin-3-O-(6 ''-acetyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4), quercetin-3-O-(6 ''-O-E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), and isorhamnetin-3-O-(6 ''-O-E-p-coumaroyl)beta-D-glucopyranoside (6) were obtained. The structures of the new isolates were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis.

New perspectives for mechanisms, ingredients, and their preparation for promoting the formation of beneficial bacterial biofilm

Zaixiang Lou, Xiaodan Zheng, Dery Bede, Wenna Dai, Chunpeng Wan, Hongxin Wang, Xiaohua Chen

Summary: Biofilm is a stable microbial community with probiotic strains that have beneficial effects. This article introduces the formation process and regulatory mechanisms of biofilm, and reviews strategies to promote biofilm growth. The extraction and purification process of natural products in exogenous substances are summarized. Studies have found various ways to promote biofilm formation, such as interfering with quorum sensing pathways and adhesion mechanisms. Probiotics and their secondary metabolites, as well as certain ingredients like hormones and natural extracts, play critical roles in promoting biofilm formation.

Amelioration of Chilling Injury by Fucoidan in Cold-Stored Cucumber via Membrane Lipid Metabolism Regulation

Yupei Zhang, Duo Lin, Ruyu Yan, Yunhe Xu, Mengying Xing, Shuyuan Liao, Chunpeng Wan, Chuying Chen, Liqin Zhu, Wenbin Kai, Jinyin Chen, Zengyu Gan

Summary: This study investigated the effect of fucoidan treatment on cucumber under cold stress. The results showed that fucoidan treatment alleviated chilling injury, delayed weight loss, and lowered electrolyte leakage and respiration rate in cold-stored cucumbers. Fucoidan also maintained the integrity of cell membrane and reduced membrane lipid peroxidation.

Baicalin inhibits pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy by regulating the SIRT3-dependent signaling pathway

Yi Cai, Shisheng Jiang, Chaoming Huang, Ao Shen, Xuan Zhang, Wanling Yang, Yichuan Xiao, Shuhan Gao, Rong Du, Guodong Zheng, Tingdong Yan, Chunpeng (Craig) Wan

Summary: In this study, baicalin was found to suppress cardiac hypertrophy through regulating the SIRT3/LKB1/AMPK signaling pathway. Additionally, baicalin upregulated SIRT3 protein expression by inhibiting proteasome and activating PSMB5. These results provide the first evidence that baicalin inhibits cardiac hypertrophy by targeting the SIRT3-dependent signaling pathway, suggesting its potential for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure.

Potential protective function of green tea polyphenol EGCG against high glucose-induced cardiac injury and aging

Chunpeng (Craig) Wan, Xiaomeng Hu, Mingxi Li, Kannan R. R. Rengasamy, Yi Cai, Zhonghua Liu

Summary: Green tea and its active extracts are commonly used in dietary supplements, but little is known about their interactions with protein targets. In this study, the researchers used bioinformatics to analyze the interactions between diabetes-related targets and green tea bioactive compounds, leading to the identification of core targets. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the major polyphenolic component of green tea, EGCG, inhibited high glucose-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, inflammation, oxidative stress response, and cellular senescence. The protective effects of EGCG were found to be mediated through PPARG-dependent pathways. This study provides comprehensive insights into the role of EGCG in high glucose-induced myocardial cell injury and aging.

The Anti-Biofilm Activity and Mechanism of Apigenin-7-O-Glucoside Against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli

Ze-Jun Pei, Chengcheng Li, Wenna Dai, Zaixiang Lou, Xin Sun, Hongxin Wang, Azmat Ali Khan, Chunpeng Wan

Summary: This study investigated the anti-biofilm activity and mechanism of gallic acid (GA), kaempferol-7-O-glucoside (K7G), and apigenin-7-O-glucoside (A7G) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. A7G showed the strongest anti-biofilm and antibacterial activities. The inhibition of A7G on biofilm was achieved through inhibiting exopolysaccharides (EPS), quorum sensing (QS), and cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH). A7G could be a promising novel antibacterial and anti-biofilm agent for control of biofilm in the food industry.

Potential anticoagulant of traditional chinese medicine and novel targets for anticoagulant drugs

Qinan Yin, Xiaoqin Zhang, Suqing Liao, Xiaobo Huang, Chunpeng Craig Wan, Yi Wang

Summary: This study aims to summarize the recent research progress on coagulation mechanisms, new anticoagulant targets, and traditional Chinese medicine. Through literature review, it is found that active components extracted from Chinese medicinal herbs, including Salvia miltiorrhiza, Chuanxiong rhizoma, safflower, and Panax notoginseng, have significant anticoagulant effects and can be potential anticoagulant drugs, but the risk of bleeding is unclear. TF/FVIIa, FVIII, FIX, FXI, FXII, and FXIII have all been evaluated as targets in animal studies or clinical trials. Among them, FXI inhibitors have shown stronger advantages. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive resource for potential anticoagulants, and FXI inhibitors can be considered as potential anticoagulant candidates. The anticoagulant effect of traditional Chinese medicine should not be ignored, and more research and new drugs are expected.
