Summary: Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has increased significantly and may lead to various health problems. Studies on the association between SSBs and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children are limited and inconsistent. We conducted a study on 6541 students aged 6-12, using a two-stage cluster sampling method. Our findings suggest that SSB intake is positively correlated with the risk of hyperactivity in children.

Summary: This study investigated the causal effects of plasma proteome on ASD, ADHD, and TS using the two-sample Mendelian Randomization approach. The findings indicate that increased levels of MAPKAPK3 and MRPL33 are associated with a higher risk of ASD, while increased MANBA levels are associated with a lower risk of ADHD. These causal associations were robust in sensitivity analysis, suggesting the involvement of the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway and mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of ASD, and a role of beta-mannosidase deficiency in the development of ADHD.

Summary: Aging poses a major challenge to the development and growth of countries worldwide. This study identified subgroups of the elderly based on their quality of life, sleep quality, and common mental disorders, and examined the influence of demographic characteristics on subgroup membership. Three subgroups were identified: healthy, anxious with poor sleep quality, and unhealthy. Being female, living in urban areas, and illiteracy were found to increase the odds of belonging to certain subgroups. These results highlight the co-occurrence of health problems among a significant portion of the elderly population.

This study identified genetic influences on inhibitory control using a genome wide association study, but larger sample sizes are needed for more robust associations. The results also support the use of executive function measures as endophenotypes for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Summary: The study found significant heritability in the rates of change of white matter tract microstructural properties and connectivity between different brain networks. Changes in hyperactivity-impulsivity were associated with heritable changes in white matter tracts metrics and connectivity between attention and cognitive networks. Summary: This study examined the association between early-childhood exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Serum levels of six PFAS were measured in 521 children at the ages of 2 and 4 years, and the ADHD Rating Scale IV (ARS) was used to measure ADHD traits at 8 years of age. The study found that exposure to PFAS was associated with ADHD symptoms.

Summary: Data on ADHD incidence, prevalence, and burden from the Global Burden of Disease study from 1990 to 2019 were presented. The study found that the global age-standardized incidence and prevalence of ADHD were 0.061% and 1.13% respectively in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, there was a decrease in global age-standardized prevalence and incidence. Males had approximately 2.5 times higher incidence, prevalence, and burden compared to females.

Summary: Based on circadian rhythm disruptions and sleep abnormalities in bipolar disorder, a study investigated the expression levels of 19 circadian genes in individuals with BD and healthy controls. Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the relationship between childhood maltreatment and cognition in patients with psychosis and community controls was influenced by genetic factors related to psychosis. The study included first-episode psychosis patients (N=755) and unaffected controls (N=1219) from the EU-GEI study, who were assessed for childhood maltreatment, intelligence quotient (IQ), family history of psychosis (FH), and polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (SZ-PRS). The results showed that controlling for FH and SZ-PRS did not weaken the association between childhood maltreatment and IQ in either cases or controls, suggesting that genetic liability factors do not explain the lower levels of cognition in adults who experienced childhood maltreatment.

Summary: COVID-19 may not increase the risk of hospitalization for psychotic disorders, as patients initially hospitalized for COVID-19 had a lower rate of subsequent hospitalization for psychotic disorders compared to those initially hospitalized for other reasons. This finding contradicts the hypothesis that there is an increased risk of psychotic disorders after a severe COVID-19 infection. Importantly, a history of psychotic disorder was found to be a major determinant of hospitalization for psychotic disorders.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between cognitive impairments and treatment response in patients with treatment-resistant depression. The findings suggest that cognitive scores improve after therapeutic response, with greater improvement observed in patients with better treatment response. Therefore, cognitive remediation should be provided after therapeutic response to enhance patients' daily functioning.
