Summary: Microbial-based biotechnological processes are moving towards sustainability by utilizing renewable feedstocks, but their viability and competitiveness are often hindered by harsh conditions. The impact of these conditions on the plasma membrane of microbial cell factories is crucial for designing strategies to enhance their fitness and productivity under industrial processes.

Summary: The study shows that the plant plasma-membrane H+-ATPase PMA2 can substitute for yeast Pma1 to promote TORC1 activation upon H+-coupled nutrient uptake. Additionally, it was found that hindering the binding of PMA2 to 14-3-3 proteins impairs its activation ability.

Summary: This study discovered a stable micron-scale protein-depleted region, named the 'void zone', in yeast mutants lacking phosphatidylserine at high temperatures. The void zone excludes transmembrane proteins, certain peripheral membrane proteins, and phospholipids, while being rich in ergosterol and requiring energy and various cellular functions for its formation. Additionally, the void zones were frequently found in contact with vacuoles, forming a membrane domain at the contact site.

Summary: This study reconstitutes the initial steps of autophagosome biogenesis during selective autophagy using autophagy factors purified from yeast, demonstrating that Atg9 vesicles play crucial roles in recruiting the autophagy machinery and establishing membrane contact sites for lipid transfer during autophagosome biogenesis.

Summary: Rafts are nanometer-size inhomogeneities in the plasma membrane that provide a platform for proteins to carry out biological processes. We used an asymmetric plasma membrane model to evaluate the likelihood of raft formation based on the compositions of sphingomyelin and cholesterol. The weight for raft formation decreased when there was little sphingomyelin and also decreased when there was a large mole fraction of sphingomyelin. The weight was highest in the bilayer with a total cholesterol mole fraction of 0.30 and decreased with increasing total cholesterol.

Summary: The plasma membrane is a complex structure intertwined with the actin cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix. Model membrane systems, such as cell-derived giant plasma membrane vesicles (GPMVs), provide a simplified model to study processes at the plasma membrane. GPMVs, being the most physiologically relevant system, have become a key tool in membrane research, but also have limitations.

Summary: Salinity poses a serious threat to land plants, but intertidal seaweeds like Bangia fuscopurpurea adapt well to salt stress. In this study, the researchers investigated the salt stress tolerance mechanism of B. fuscopurpurea by analyzing the expression of BfPMHA genes, identifying the protein structure and properties of BfPMHA, and screening candidate proteins interacting with BfPMHA during salt stress. They found that BfPMHA expression increased significantly under hypo-salinity, and three candidate proteins were identified. Overexpressing these proteins enhanced yeast tolerance to NaCl stress, supporting the role of BfPMHA in salt stress response.

Summary: This study reports on a new patient with novel heterozygous variants in COX11, presenting with Leigh-like features. Through the use of yeast models and in vitro analysis, we validate the effects of these mutations on yeast growth, respiration, and cellular redox status, as well as their potential impact on human protein stability and function. This study expands the mutational landscape of COX11-associated mitochondrial disorders and highlights the importance of yeast models in dissecting complex molecular pathways.

Summary: Yeast plays a crucial role in the production of beer. This study investigated the impact of rehydration of dry brewing yeast in specific conditions on the quality of beer. The results showed that rehydration with PTWAir accelerated the fermentation process and significantly altered the composition of volatile compounds in the finished beer, enhancing its aroma.

Summary: This study introduces a new deep learning model, CoCoPRED, for comprehensive prediction of structural features of coiled-coil proteins. Experimental results demonstrate that CoCoPRED outperforms existing models in CCD and oligomeric state prediction. Further analysis suggests that CCD prediction may serve as a performance indicator for oligomeric state prediction.

Summary: Membrane phase separation in vacuoles of budding yeast during the cell's growth cycle is regulated by physical conditions and is essential for yeast survival. The transition temperature of phase separation is adapted by cells to maintain proximity to the transition. Depletion of ergosterol, the major sterol in yeast, leads to the formation of membrane domains, contradicting previous assumptions.

Summary: Proteins exit from endosomes through retromer-coated tubular carriers, which affects cellular signaling, lysosomal biogenesis, and various diseases. The coat formation requires overcoming membrane tension. In this study, we investigated the dynamics and driving force of this process using yeast retromer, BAR-domain sorting nexins Vps5 and Vps17, and synthetic lipid tubules. The results showed that the coat forms a static tubular structure by bidirectional oligomerization, and high concentrations of sorting nexins constrict the membrane tubes. However, retromer oligomers are needed to drive constriction at lower concentrations.

Summary: Cold plasmas can affect cell physiology and viability, leading to various technologies for sterilization, food processing, seed germination, and cell therapy. However, the mechanisms of plasma-cell interactions are still poorly understood, necessitating the use of simple eukaryotic models to study these effects.
