High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a central mediator in inflammation and immunity. Recently, it was shown that different redox states of the three cysteines of HMGB1 endow it with mutually exclusive activities, such as inducing chemotaxis or the transcription of cytokines and chemokines, via the interaction with different receptors. The different HMGB1 redox forms can be identified by mass spectrometry in body fluids of patients and may hold promise as biomarkers. We propose here a systematic nomenclature of the different redox forms of HMGB1 and related proteins, to replace the conflicting names used so far by different laboratories.

Summary: We observed the first gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever detected at TeV energies, GRB 190114C, and studied its underlying supernova SN 2019jrj using ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope. We found that the afterglow emission can be explained by a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium with time-variable extinction along the line of sight. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN 2019jrj are narrower than classical GRB supernovae and more similar to less-luminous core-collapse supernovae.

Summary: High mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) interferes with EPO signaling pathways, leading to reduced expansion and increased death of EPO-sensitive erythroid precursors in patients with anemia of inflammation. This study provides important insights into the chronic phase of anemia of inflammation.

Summary: This paper presents measurements of X-ray polarization in the 2-8 keV band from the nucleus of the radio galaxy Centaurus A (Cen A) using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The results show no statistically significant degree of polarization. Spectral fitting reveals that the X-ray spectrum of Cen A is well described by a power law with intrinsic absorption and a Fe K alpha emission line. The study also suggests that the reprocessing material responsible for the emission line is optically thin.

Summary: Polarized 3-6 keV X-ray emission from the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) has been detected with a significance of similar to 5 sigma using IXPE. The measurements indicate an overall polarization degree of 1.8% +/- 0.3%, with an average polarization degree of similar to 2.5% for the synchrotron component and close to 5% for the X-ray synchrotron-dominated forward shock region.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of X-ray linear polarization in the jet of high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421 using the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The X-ray polarization degree is higher at shorter wavelengths and shows no significant variability, suggesting a shock as the likely X-ray emission site in the jet.

Summary: We report the first observation of a radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) in polarized X-rays, which was observed in the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-05-23-16. The analysis of the observation data revealed some characteristics of this phenomenon, such as the polarization degree and the broad-band spectrum. Comparisons with simulations further enhance our understanding of this phenomenon.

Summary: This study presents the multiwavelength observations of MAXI J1820+070, a low-mass X-ray binary, and finds evidence of a non-thermal particle population. The results also provide constraints on the source properties, particularly in relation to the high-energy gamma-ray emitting region and its distance from the black hole.

Summary: This study presents the polarimetric observation of the X-ray binary system Cygnus X-1. The alignment of the electric field position angle with the outflowing jet suggests that the jet originates from the inner x-ray-emitting region. The observation also indicates that the accretion disk is viewed closer to edge-on than the binary orbit, and the hot x-ray-emitting plasma extends in a plane perpendicular to the jet axis.

Summary: The launch of IXPE on December 9, 2021 has provided a new perspective in X-ray astronomy. In this study, we present the first observation results of GS 1826-238, a weakly magnetized neutron star, using IXPE on March 29-31, 2022. The upper limit of linear polarization degree (99.73% confidence level) is found to be 1.3% in the energy range of 2-8 keV. Coordinated observations with INTEGRAL and NICER were conducted simultaneously to constrain the geometry and inclination angle of GS 1826-238.

Summary: A multiwavelength polarization analysis of BL Lacertae suggests that proton-synchrotron radiation does not significantly contribute to its X-ray emission, providing support for a leptonic origin.

Glycyrrhizic Acid Inhibits High-Mobility Group Box-1 and Homocysteine-Induced Vascular Dysfunction

Laura Kate Gadanec, Ulf Andersson, Vasso Apostolopoulos, Anthony Zulli

Summary: High levels of HMGB-1 have been found in patients with Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), which worsens cardiovascular outcomes. Targeting HMGB-1 may be a potential therapy for improving HHcy-induced cardiovascular pathologies.

Vagus nerve SARS-CoV-2 infection and inflammatory reflex dysfunction: Is there a causal relationship?

Ulf Andersson, Kevin J. Tracey

Summary: Autonomic dysfunction is a common feature of SARS-CoV-2 infection, but the mechanisms behind it remain unknown. Recent evidence suggests that viral infection and inflammation in the vagus nerve may contribute to dysregulated respiration and impairment of the vagus nerve inflammatory reflex. This reflex is an important mechanism for suppressing cytokine storm, and its dysfunction may contribute to hyperinflammatory pathogenesis in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) consists of three types of telescopes, distributed in two observation sites. The planned construction of 37 (+5) SST telescopes for the CTA South Alpha Configuration, and potentially up to 70 in future upgrades, will provide advanced optical design and SiPM detectors for a wide field of view.

Summary: ASTRI Mini-Array is an international project to build and operate a array of nine 4-m class Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes for deep observations of gamma rays. The project aims to achieve effective handling and scientific exploitation of the data through dedicated systems for Data Processing, Simulation, and Archive. The raw data will be processed and analyzed to generate final scientific products, and detailed simulated data will be used for precise reconstruction and background rejection. The Archive System will provide data access at different user levels and for different use cases.
