Summary: This study identified the LFRFa and short neuropeptide F receptor in Pacific abalone, demonstrating their key roles in food intake and reproduction. The expression levels of LFRFa are significantly higher in mature female abalone, and injection of LFRFa induces egg release and spawning behavior while suppressing food intake.

Summary: This study isolated and characterized a CA I from the mantle tissue of Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. The CA I protein showed higher expression levels in the mantle and strong signals in the tissue responsible for nacreous layer formation, indicating its potential role in shell biomineralization of abalone.

Summary: This study aimed to better understand the characterization and biological function of BMP7 of Haliotis discus hannai (hdh-BMP7) via cloning and sequencing analysis. The results showed that hdh-BMP7 mRNA was widely expressed in all the examined tissues of H. discus hannai and was associated with growth traits. Silencing hdh-BMP7 led to decreased expression levels of hdh-BMPR I, hdh-BMPR II, hdh-smad1, and hdh-MHC, as well as reduced shell length, shell width, and total weight in H. discus hannai. The results suggest that BMP7 gene plays a positive role in the growth of H. discus hannai.

Summary: The study revealed that H. gigantea, H. discus discus, and H. discus hannai are susceptible to Abalone asfa-like virus (AbALV), while H. diversicolor is not. Through experimental infection and immunohistological observations, it confirmed that AbALV is the etiological agent of abalone amyotrophia.

Summary: This study measured the growth and feed efficiency traits of Pacific abalone and established an individual-based accurate measurement method. The results showed that residual feed intake (RFI) can be used as a suitable trait for indicating the feed efficiency of abalone, and it is genetically correlated with other traits.

Summary: Aquaporins (AQPs) are a group of proteins that mediate specific permeation of water and small solutes, and play important roles in osmoregulation and nutrition in aquatic animals. Genome-wide characterization of AQPs in Pacific abalone showed that tandem duplication and retroduplication led to the expansion and diversification of AQP genes. Structural analysis revealed abnormal characteristics in tandem duplicated AQPs, which altered pore diameter and properties of the inner surface, allowing the passage of molecules other than water. Functional analysis indicated that the abnormal region of tandem duplicated AQPs led to different permeability, suggesting neofunctionalization. Mutation analysis further supported the mechanism of neofunctionalization. These findings provide strong evidence for the structural and functional diversity of AQPs in Pacific abalone and shed light on the evolution of AQPs in molluscs.

Summary: In this study, chromosome-specific probes were developed for Pacific abalone and used to study chromosome evolution in related species. The probes were successfully anchored onto pseudochromosomes of the Pacific abalone genome and validated for their specificity. The study also revealed a chromosome rearrangement event between Pacific abalone and Xishi abalone. This research provides important tools for cytogenetics and genomics research in the family Haliotidae.

Summary: The Haliotis discus hannai is an economically important species in China, but slow growth and small size have caused losses to farmers. Molecular genetic manipulation is the most effective way to breed high-quality abalone with rapid growth rates. This study revealed that the myostatin gene played a critical role in the growth regulation of H. discus hannai and provided a reference for mollusk breeding using molecular markers for growth traits.
