Summary: This study investigated the effect of iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium on the microstructural characteristics of Al-11%Si-2%Cu-Mg-based alloy. The study found that strontium has a high affinity to react with magnesium, reducing its effectiveness as a silicon modifier or age hardening agent. The interaction between iron and magnesium, as well as strontium-magnesium, resulted in the formation of several dissolvable intermetallic compounds.

Summary: The study introduces a new technology for the soft x-ray Opacity Spectrometer (OpSpec) used on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which incorporates an elliptically shaped crystal to improve spectral measurements. The elliptical design reduces background interference and eliminates reflection issues, but has a limited energy range.

Summary: Soft X-ray irradiation on hydrogenated silicon-containing diamond-like carbon films results in thickness reduction and changes in local carbon atom structure without altering elemental composition. Doping with silicon suppresses volume reduction caused by exposure to soft X-rays in DLC films.

Summary: The phase equilibria of the Mg-Gd-Zn system at 500 degrees C in the region below 50 at.% Gd were studied, revealing nine stable ternary phases and establishing their composition ranges. A partial isothermal section was constructed for the region, providing valuable insight into the phase behavior of this system.

Summary: This study presents the design and testing of a compact multichannel soft x-ray spectrometer with both spatial and temporal resolution capabilities for the quantitative measurement of plasma soft x-ray spectra in indirect-drive laser inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The calibrated spectrometer showed good measurement results in experiments, demonstrating its feasibility.

Summary: This study investigates the precipitation strengthening behavior and its effect on the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloy during isothermal aging. The results show that the growth of nanoprecipitates in size and volume fraction is quantitatively related to precipitation strengthening. The use of in-situ synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique provides more accurate parameters for predictive models.

Summary: In this study, a Zn-0.8Mg-0.28CaO wt.% composite was prepared using different ball milling conditions and a direct extrusion process. The microstructure and compressive properties of the materials were characterized, and the correlation between these characteristics was examined. It was found that the grain size and compressive strength did not have a linear relationship due to the influence of factors such as texture, intermetallic phases, and pores.

Summary: A molten salt synthesis method was used to produce sphere-like single-crystal magnesium-doped LiCoO2. The lattice strain was effectively alleviated, and the phase transition was suppressed by both the particle shape and Mg doping. The preference for Mg doping in the Co site rather than the Li site in the LCO framework was systematically revealed.

Summary: This study reports on the temporal and spectral analysis of three thermonuclear X-ray bursts observed from 4U 1608-52 by NICER during and after the 2020 outburst. It found secondary peaks in two of the bursts with different properties compared to the initial peaks, and a brighter third burst occurring at lower accretion rates. These observations challenge standard scenarios and understanding of flame spreading.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the monotonic and cyclic deformation behavior of a high-pressure die cast Silafont (R)-36 alloy in a naturally-aged T4 state. The T4 heat treatment led to significant microstructural changes, resulting in the transformation of coralloid-like eutectic Si particles to spheroidal Si particles embedded in the Al matrix. The T4 alloy exhibited strong cyclic hardening and a longer low cycle fatigue life compared to its as-cast state at lower strain amplitudes, attributed to particle-dislocation interactions during deformation. A strain energy density-based model incorporating microstructural aspects can be used to predict the fatigue life of the T4 alloy.

Summary: In this study, multiple shot peening was used to investigate the residual stress fields and tissue structure evolution of a carbon nanotubes-reinforced aluminum matrix composite. It was found that multiple shot peening could significantly increase the compressive residual stress field and modify the surface morphology of the specimens. It also resulted in the refinement of grain sizes in the near surface layer and the elevation of dislocation density. Moreover, the modified peened layers exhibited enhanced microhardness with a more even distribution.

Summary: Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) allows imaging of biological specimens and collection of localized spectroscopic information through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and/or X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES). Recent publications in synchrotrons have utilized soft X-ray spectro-microscopy in life science and environmental research to explore complex metabolic mechanisms by tracing chemical elements involved in metabolic pathways.
