Summary: Saccharides play critical roles in cellular activities, and the identification of their complex and similar structures presents a technical challenge. Researchers have developed a nanopore sensing strategy that can identify saccharides based on minor structural differences. They also trained a machine learning algorithm for automatic event classification and achieved a high accuracy score.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an important reactive oxygen species (ROS), is closely related to various pathological and physiological processes in living organisms. Excessive H2O2 can lead to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, necessitating the detection of H2O2 in living cells. This study designed a new fluorescent probe that effectively detects H2O2 with high selectivity and measures cellular ROS levels, providing a potential monitoring tool for various diseases caused by H2O2 excess.

Summary: Viruses pose a significant threat to humans when present in contaminated waters, especially for vulnerable populations. In this study, bench-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the removal of a model virus (SVCV) in water using boronic acid-modified bacterial cellulose microspheres as adsorbents. The results showed that SVCV was effectively removed with a 3-log reduction in virus concentration within 3 hours. This research provides substantial evidence that bacterial cellulose-based materials have the potential for virus removal from water, which is of great importance.

Summary: Small-molecule based fluorescent probes play an increasingly important role in detecting and imaging biological signaling molecules due to their simplicity, high selectivity, and real-time analysis capabilities. Various sensing mechanisms, including FRET, ICT, PeT, ESIPT, AIE, as well as dual/triple sensing mechanisms, are highlighted, but challenges remain. Future development should focus on improving small-molecule fluorescent probes for biosensing applications.

Summary: Fluorescent polymer dots (PDs) were successfully prepared from natural polyphenols via one-pot co-polymerization under mild conditions without the use of organic solvents or harsh chemicals. The resulting PDs exhibited good photostability and biocompatibility, as well as high selectivity towards copper ions. This green and facile strategy opens up new possibilities for the design and preparation of natural molecule-based PDs for biomedical and environmental applications.

Summary: This study reports a novel water-soluble boronic acid sensor with double recognition sites. The sensor can sensitively recognize gallic acid and has no recognition ability towards other analytes. It has a fast response time and a high binding constant, making it a potential tool for the detection of gallic acid in actual samples.
