The PrEProcessor of time invariant parameters required for the boundary data definition in the COSMO-CLM is described. PEP incorporates the present preprocessor from DWD and gives additional access to the geospatial information provided by the ECOCLIMAP data. It processes various global geospatial data into spatial resolution and into rotated coordinates system specified by the user. Available global topography, land cover as well as soil characteristics datasets are reviewed and their use in various processing options of PEP is presented.

Will forest dynamics continue to accelerate throughout the 21st century in the Northern Alps?

Dominik Thom, Werner Rammer, Patrick Laux, Gerhard Smiatek, Harald Kunstmann, Sebastian Seibold, Rupert Seidl

Summary: Observational evidence suggests that forests in the Northern Alps are changing at an increasing rate due to climate change. This study used a process-based forest landscape model to simulate future forest dynamics and found that the acceleration of forest dynamics will continue in the coming decades. However, forest structure changes are expected to level off in the second half of the 21st century, while tree species changes diverge under different climate scenarios.

Summary: By evaluating the combined effect of multiple climate models and bias correction methods, the study found that the water resources in the Crati River Basin in Southern Italy will decrease significantly in the future decades, mainly due to the increase in temperature and the decrease in precipitation. The driving climate model was identified as the primary source of uncertainty, and the bias correction methods contributed to reducing the uncertainty.

Potential Impact of the Pan-African Great Green Wall on Sahelian Summer Precipitation: A Global Modeling Approach with MPAS

Gerhard Smiatek, Harald Kunstmann

Summary: The pan-African Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel initiative aims to reverse land degradation through reforestation. However, our investigation found no significant evidence that the GGW-induced changes in precipitation characteristics or positive impacts on forestation activities in the Sahel. Our simulations showed regional-scale changes in precipitation, but they were not statistically significant at the 5% level.
