Summary: Natural products (NPs) have been a significant source and inspiration for developing novel crop protection compounds, with NPs, their derivatives, and compounds inspired by NPs accounting for 17% of all crop protection compounds. The impact of NPs on the discovery of new modes of action and innovation in crop protection compounds has been consistent over the past 70 years. NPs have had the largest impact on insecticides compared to fungicides and herbicides.

Summary: Cardenolide-free extracts from Digitalis obscura exhibited significant antifeedant effects against aphids, with the activity correlated to their phenylethanoid content. The isolation of rengyolone and hallerone from D. obscura was achieved, with their antifeedant and nematicidal activities reported for the first time. This study provides new insights into the bioactivity of phenylethanoids from D. obscura.

Summary: This review discusses the creation of encapsulated bioactive compounds (EBC) from fruit and vegetable by-products (FVBP) using microencapsulation techniques and their application in food. Technologies such as spray-drying, freeze-drying, and coacervation have been proven effective in producing EBC with high encapsulation efficiency and excellent functional properties, improving the stability and solubility of bioactive compounds. Studies on the application of EBC from FVBP in food show promising results, making it a potential alternative for the treatment of agricultural and agro-industrial by-products.

Summary: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has aimed to promote sustainable agriculture over the past six decades, but global pesticide use continues to rise, impacting farmer livelihoods, biodiversity, and the right to food. Despite good intentions, IPM faces challenges such as multiple definitions, inconsistencies in practice and policies, and lack of farmer engagement.

Summary: Many specialty crop producers continue to use outdated pesticide application technologies, such as radial air blast sprayers, despite the availability of precision sprayers that offer significant improvements. Reasons for the continued use of old technologies include risk averseness of farmers and regulatory bottlenecks, but as farm labor becomes more expensive and consumers and regulations increasingly favor sustainable products, motivation to improve spray application efficiency is growing. Sensor-controlled sprayer technology is likely to be the primary technology for precision sprayers in the future.

Summary: Plant diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms have a significant impact on agriculture. The use of chemical pesticides and antimicrobials has adverse effects on human health and the environment, and contributes to the emergence of antibiotic resistance among phytopathogens. Therefore, it is crucial to explore natural alternatives. The Streptomyces genus of bacteria has been extensively researched for its ability to produce diverse antimicrobial compounds, making it a potential biological control agent against plant pathogens.

Summary: Synthetic insecticides are still the main strategy for managing insect pests. However, their negative impact on non-target species and the issue of insect resistance need to be addressed. The use of insecticide mixtures with synergistic effects can reduce the dose of insecticides, delay the selection of resistant strains, and limit their negative impact.

Summary: In this study, a series of 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their antifungal activities against maize disease pathogens were evaluated. The synthesized derivatives showed strong antifungal activities, especially against E. turcicum. Some compounds induced significant shrinkage and collapse of E. turcicum hyphae. Furthermore, these compounds with antifungal activities exhibited almost no cytotoxicity to MCF-7 cells. The 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives have the potential to be used as antifungal agents for the control of maize diseases.
