Recent studies suggest that serum cystatin C level is not only a sensitive marker for renal dysfunction but also a predictive marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD) However, the mechanism of this connection is not fully understood We aimed to determine whether insulin resistance or various biomarkers of cardiovascular risk have a role in the link between cystatin C and CVD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical studies including inflammatory biomarkers were performed in 478 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus The degree of insulin resistance was assessed by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) and indicators of metabolic syndrome Estimated glomerulai filtration rate (eGER) was derived from the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease study equation After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and eGER, the cystatin C level increased significantly in proportion to the number of metabolic syndrome components present (1.08 +/- 0.06, 1.19 +/- 0.04, 1.20 +/- 0.04, 1.23 +/- 0.04, and 1.37 +/- 0.06 mg/L, P < 0001), and HOMA-IR increased significantly in proportion to cystatm C quartiles (I 16 0 15, 1 40 0 13, I 49 (1 13, and 2 00 0 17, P < 0001) (means SE) Albumn-creatinine ratio. fibrinogen, uric acid. homocysteine, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and lipoprotein(a) all showed significant correlations with cystatm C that were generally higher than those with eGFR Cystatin C level was independently associated with HOMA-IR (beta = 0.0380, P = 0082), albumin-mainline ratio (beta = 0.0004, P < 0001), uric acid (beta = 0.0666, P < .0001), and homocysteme (beta = 0 0087, P = 0004) In conclusion, cystatm C level was significantly associated with insulin resistance and biomarkers reflecting inflammation independent of renal function These components may have a role in addition to that of eGER in explaining the link between cystatm C and CVD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved.

Cumulative exposure to metabolic syndrome increases thyroid cancer risk in young adults: a population-based cohort study

Jinyoung Kim, Kyungdo Han, Mee Kyoung Kim, Ki-Hyun Baek, Ki-Ho Song, Hyuk-Sang Kwon

Summary: Despite a similar examination rate, there has been a re-increasing trend in thyroid cancer since 2015, especially among young adults. A study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service found that cumulative exposure to metabolic syndrome was associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer in young adults. The risk increased with the number of diagnoses of metabolic syndrome across multiple health examinations.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with kidney cancer and the impact of age and gender on such an association. The study used the Korean National Health Insurance Service database to follow up 9,932,670 subjects who had check-ups in 2009 until the diagnosis of kidney cancer or death or until 2019. The results showed that kidney cancer was significantly associated with MetS, with a higher association in younger age groups and higher associations with obesity and central obesity in younger aged male population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between weight change and diabetes remission in patients with new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study found that weight loss within the first 2 years of treating type 2 diabetes was associated with diabetes remission, and the likelihood of remission increased with greater weight loss. Physicians should pay more attention to weight management, particularly for young and obese individuals with new-onset type 2 diabetes.

Upper small intestine microbiome in obesity and related metabolic disorders: A new field of investigation

Summary: The study of the gut microbiome is crucial for understanding and treating metabolic diseases. While research on the fecal microbiome has provided valuable insights, relying solely on this may not be enough to draw comprehensive conclusions. The microbiome in the proximal part of the small intestine may play a significant role in metabolic regulation, but further exploration is needed due to limited accessibility.

Glucocorticoids and intrauterine programming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Ze Chen, Li -Ping Xia, Lang Shen, Dan Xu, Yu Guo, Hui Wang

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that NAFLD has an intrauterine origin, with adverse prenatal environments and glucocorticoid exposure playing a crucial role in the developmental programming of fetal hepatic lipid metabolism. The offspring's glucocorticoid-insulin-like growth factor 1 (GC-IGF1) axis is programmed in utero, leading to postnatal catch-up growth and disrupted glucose and lipid metabolism, increasing susceptibility to NAFLD. Mismatch between intrauterine and postnatal environments can further disturb the programmed endocrine axes and accelerate the onset of NAFLD.

CCDC92 deficiency ameliorates podocyte lipotoxicity in diabetic kidney disease

Fuwen Zuo, Youzhao Wang, Xinlei Xu, Ruihao Ding, Wei Tang, Yu Sun, Xiaojie Wang, Yan Zhang, Jichao Wu, Yusheng Xie, Min Liu, Ziying Wang, Fan Yi

Summary: This study investigates the role of CCDC92 in the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The expression of CCDC92 was found to increase in kidney biopsies from patients with DKD and was correlated with glomerular lipid accumulation. Animal studies further confirmed the induction of CCDC92 in the kidney, particularly in podocytes, and the podocyte-specific deletion of Ccdc92 ameliorated podocyte injury and lipid deposition. CCDC92 was shown to promote podocyte lipotoxicity through ABCA1 signaling-mediated lipid homeostasis. Therefore, CCDC92 may serve as a potential biomarker of podocyte injury in DKD and targeting CCDC92 could be an innovative therapeutic strategy for DKD patients.

Brown adipose tissue-derived metabolites and their role in regulating metabolism

Khanyisani Ziqubu, Phiwayinkosi Dludla, Sihle E. Mabhida, Babalwa U. Jack, Susanne Keipert, Martin Jastroch, Sithandiwe E. Mazibuko-Mbeje

Summary: The discovery and revival of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult humans have opened up new possibilities for treating obesity and metabolic diseases. BAT not only plays a role in generating heat, but also secretes signaling molecules known as batokines, which regulate overall metabolism. This review highlights the importance of BAT-derived metabolites in controlling thermogenesis, substrate metabolism, and other biological processes, as well as their potential to alleviate obesity and related metabolic complications.
