Growth and maturation of adolescent female gymnasts, swimmers, and tennis players

Purpose: To compare the somatic growth, sexual maturation, and final adult height of elite adolescent female athletes. Methods: Serial measures of height, sitting height, and breast and pubic hair development were taken on 81 gymnasts, 60 swimmers, and 81 tennis players between 8 and 19 yr of age. Menarcheal age, parental heights, maternal menarcheal age, and number of training hours were also recorded. Final adult heights were obtained from a subsample of the athletes (N = 110). Results: Gymnasts were significantly shorter than tennis players and swimmers at all chronological ages during adolescence, and they attained menarche at an older age (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found in adult heights. During adolescence, no difference were found in standing height to sitting height ratios, leg length to standing height ratios, or sitting height to leg length ratios between sports (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The results from this study suggest that regular training did not affect final adult stature and that, when aligned by biological age, the tempo of sexual maturation was similar in these young athletes.

Body Size, Fatness and Skeletal Age in Female Youth Soccer Players

Muscle herniae: Conservative and surgical management. Systematic review

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of conservative and surgical management for muscle herniae and determine the most appropriate management based on the etiology and size of the fascial defect. The findings suggest that fasciotomy should be considered for congenital muscle herniae to prevent complications, while direct suture repair can be used for small fascial defects in post-traumatic muscle herniae, and mesh repair and autologous graft repair are recommended to avoid severe complications.

Therapeutic ultrasound related pain threshold in elite track & field athletes with tibial bone stress injuries

Summary: This study used therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) as a primary diagnostic tool to assess tibial stress injuries and compared its sensitivity with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed that TUS has a sensitivity of 79.2% related to MRI, making it a useful tool for clinicians to initially assess suspected tibial stress injuries in high-level track and field athletes.

Increased Time to Surgery After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear in Female Patients Results in Greater Risk of Medial Meniscus Tear: A Study of 489 Female Patients

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence of meniscal tears in ACL-deficient knees in a large sample of female patients and to evaluate the effects of surgery timing, age, and BMI on the rate of meniscal repair or meniscectomy. The results showed that a delay in surgery greater than 12 months increased the risk of nonrepairable medial meniscal tear, especially between 24 and 60 months after injury. Increasing age up to 30-50 years was associated with a greater prevalence of meniscal tears, while BMI had no clear association with associated lesions. The findings highlight the importance of timely ACL reconstruction for female patients to reduce the risk of meniscal tears.

However, the evaluation of miRNAs in patients with meniscal tears remains controversial. A systematic review was conducted to explore the potential of miRNAs in the diagnosis and management of meniscal damage.

Rehabilitation protocols should consider accurate diagnosis, patient expectations, and geographical differences in ACL rehabilitation.

Delayed Surgical Treatment of Displaced Intra-Articular Calcaneal Fractures in Major Trauma Is Safe and Effective

The study found no significant differences between the groups in terms of wound complications or quality of reduction.

Factors Influencing the Yield of Progenitor Cells in Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate-A Retrospective Analysis of 58 Patients

Summary: This study aimed to determine the influence of subjective factors (age, sex, and comorbidities) and procedure-specific factors (aspiration volume) on the yield of progenitor cells in bone marrow aspiration concentrate (BMAC) harvested from the iliac crest. A retrospective analysis on 58 patients undergoing BMAC therapy revealed that age, comorbidities, and aspirate volume significantly affected progenitor cell yield, while sex did not have a significant impact. These findings highlight the importance of considering individual and procedural factors when assessing the effectiveness of BMAC therapy.

Efficacy of hydrodilatation in frozen shoulder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of hydrodilatation for the management of frozen shoulder compared with other conservative management modalities. The study found that hydrodilatation leads to more marked short-term improvements in shoulder disability and passive external rotation compared with intra-articular corticosteroid injections. However, the clinical relevance of hydrodilatation remains unclear, and further research is necessary to establish its role in the management of frozen shoulder.

Rotational ankle instability: A current concept review

Summary: Ankle sprains are common and understanding the recovery process is important for effective management decisions and identifying potential risk factors for chronic problems and recurrent sprains. Delayed diagnosis can result in untreated ligament tears and chronic ankle instability. Conservative treatment is preferred, with surgery as an option for special cases. Ankle arthroscopy is increasingly used to address ligament insufficiency and intra-articular pathologies.
