Summary: The study provides a comprehensive overview of the prevalence of hypertension in Ghana, highlighting the persistently high rates of hypertension in the country. It also points out that the urban-rural gap in hypertension prevalence is narrowing, especially among the elderly population. The findings emphasize the need for public health interventions in Ghana to address and reduce hypertension prevalence in rural areas.

Summary: This study used a systematic and meta-analysis approach to investigate the association between cadmium exposure and blood pressure/hypertension. The findings suggest a positive relationship between blood and hair cadmium levels and hypertension, and indicate that hair is the optimal biological sample for assessing this relationship for both genders.

Summary: The association between greenspaces and blood pressure has been investigated in various studies, with mixed results. This systematic review and meta-analysis found that greenspace exposure, measured by normalized difference vegetation index and proportion of greenspaces, was associated with lower levels of blood pressure and reduced odds of hypertension. However, distance to greenspaces did not show a significant effect. Further well-designed studies, preferably longitudinal, are needed to confirm and quantify these observed benefits in blood pressure and hypertension.

Summary: This study reviewed the relationship between the use of particulate respirators and blood pressure changes, finding that respirator use may lead to a decrease in blood pressure. Studies involving elderly individuals, high PM2.5 exposure, and resting blood pressure monitoring showed a larger decrease in blood pressure as a result of respirator use. Further intervention studies with a larger sample size and more diverse subject characteristics are needed to provide additional evidence to the current literature.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between parenting practices and children's food choices. The results revealed that parenting practices allowing unhealthy snacks and excessive screen time, providing more unhealthy food options at home, and rewarding with snacks and screen time were positively associated with children's unhealthy food choices. On the other hand, parenting practices providing fruit and vegetables, consuming fruit, and being physically active with the child were positively associated with children's healthier food choices.

Summary: This study investigated the association between diet quality and fasting glycemia, insulinemia, and insulin resistance in adults from high-risk type 2 diabetes mellitus families in six European countries, taking into account socioeconomic status. The results showed that higher diet quality was negatively associated with insulin levels and insulin resistance in the high socioeconomic status group.

Summary: This research investigates the association between dental caries trajectory and rs307355 (TAS1R3) and rs35874116 (TAS1R2), as well as the epistatic association between rs307355 (TAS1R3) and rs35874116 (TAS1R2). A representative sample of 5,914 individuals from the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort was prospectively studied. Group-based trajectory modeling identified different groups with similar dental caries trajectories throughout life. Genetic material was collected for genotyping rs307355 (TAS1R3) and rs35874116 (TAS1R2). The study found that the genotype and allele of rs307355 (TAS1R3) were positively associated with the trajectory of decayed and missing dental components. Epistatic interaction between rs307355 and rs35874116 may increase the decayed caries trajectory.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of tooth wear and its associated factors in adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort. The results showed that 61.6% of the individuals had tooth wear, with females having a lower prevalence compared to males. Additionally, the consumption of acid and alcoholic beverages was positively associated with tooth wear.

Summary: This study investigates the association between PTPN1 gene polymorphisms and obesity-related phenotypes in European adolescents. It reveals that these polymorphisms are associated with lower adiposity levels in physically active adolescents. Meeting the recommendations of daily physical activity may therefore reduce obesity risk by modulating genetic predisposition.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum levels of the novel insulin-like adipokine isthmin-1 (ISM1) and obesity-related phenotypes in Spanish children, as well as investigate the molecular alterations behind the alteration of ISM1 levels in children with obesity. The results showed that boys with obesity had higher serum ISM1 levels compared to normal weight and overweight boys. ISM1 levels were positively associated with BMI Z-score and fat mass in boys, and negatively associated with myeloperoxidase (MPO). Although no associations were found in girls, fat mass was positively associated with ISM1 levels in all children. DNA methylation levels of two CpG sites in ISM1 were associated with serum levels of ISM1 in children. In conclusion, ISM1 is associated with obesity in boys during puberty and may serve as a biomarker of obesity in children.

Summary: A randomized crossover study was conducted in three University accommodation halls to investigate the impact of different diets on dietary quality. The study found that the inclusion of beef or chicken in the participants' diets did not significantly affect the overall quality of their diets. However, when analyzing the first period alone, it was observed that participants who received the beef diet showed a significant decrease in fruit and vegetable consumption, while those on the chicken diet significantly reduced their consumption of fish and eggs. Additionally, the chicken diet also had a negative effect on the overall diet quality.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between family meal frequency and children's overweight/obesity in families at high risk of type 2 diabetes across six European countries. The results showed that a high frequency of family breakfasts and/or dinners was inversely associated with children's BMI. Boys and girls who consumed a minimum of three times family breakfasts and/or family dinners a week had decreased odds of overweight/obesity at follow-up.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in tooth mineral tissue genes on dental caries trajectory and the potential gene-gene interaction. A representative sample of 5,914 births from the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort study was prospectively investigated. The findings suggest that certain SNPs in tooth mineral tissue genes are associated with dental caries trajectory and epistatic interactions, expanding the understanding of individual caries experience. The results highlight the clinical significance of SNPs in the pathway of tooth mineral tissue genes in the development of dental caries throughout the lifespan.

Summary: The study investigates the association between different lifestyle patterns (LPs) and the existence of prediabetes in adults from families at high risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Europe. The results show that one LP is positively associated with prediabetes, while another LP is not significantly associated with prediabetes. Understanding LPs could provide necessary evidence for planning interventions and education strategies for prediabetes and T2D.

Summary: This manuscript aims to assess the association between meeting or not meeting physical activity (PA) and sedentary screen time (SST) recommendations and the consumption of different food groups. The results showed that adolescents who met PA and SST recommendations had a higher intake of healthy foods, but the negative relationship between unhealthy food and SST was stronger in males regardless of PA. More studies are needed to evaluate the combined effect of PA and SST on dietary habits in children and adolescents.
