Summary: This study compares the characteristics and outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE) patients with and without brain abscesses (BA), as well as evaluates the MRI characteristics of BA. The results show that BA-IE patients have higher rates of predisposing factors, bacterial meningitis, rare pathogens, and extra-cerebral abscesses. MRI can help diagnose and manage BA patients.

Summary: This case report describes a patient with infective endocarditis who developed multiple mycotic aneurysms despite effective antibiotic treatment. The patient experienced cerebral hemorrhage and increased number of aneurysms in various arteries, but after embolization and mitral valve replacement, the aneurysms resolved. Multiple mycotic aneurysms can occur even if laboratory data improve, and early consideration of cardiac surgery for infection control is important.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical profile at admission of patients with left-sided native valve infective endocarditis in a contemporary wide series of patients and to compare them among the most frequent etiologies. The study found that the etiology of infective endocarditis was closely associated with the modes of presentation and the clinical picture at admission.

Summary: Infective Endocarditis (IE) patients can develop a rare but serious complication called cerebral mycotic aneurysm, leading to subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). A study examined the rate of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and outcomes in IE patients with and without SAH using a patient database. Results showed that IE patients with SAH had a more complicated course, higher mortality rate, and worse outcomes, with a significantly higher rate of AIS than those without SAH.

Summary: This retrospective case series analyzed the data of 15 patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infective endocarditis. The study aimed to improve the understanding of risk factors, clinical features, treatments, and outcomes. The results showed that all patients presented with fever, with preexisting prosthetic valve and valvular heart disease being the most common risk factors. Healthcare associated infection and left-sided valvular involvement were more common than previously reported. Complications occurred in 11 patients with a 30-day mortality rate of 13%.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical course and outcome of patients with recurrent versus first-episode infective endocarditis (IE). The results showed that there were similar in-hospital and 1-year mortality rates between patients with recurrent and first-episode IE, and they shared similar predictors of poor outcome.

Summary: Infective endocarditis caused by Corynebacterium species is a severe condition mainly affecting prosthetic valves, with frequent requirement for surgical intervention. Corynebacterium striatum is a significant pathogen within the genus causing infective endocarditis. Antibiotic resistance of corynebacteria is common, but resistance to vancomycin was not detected in vitro.

Summary: Dalbavancin, derived from teicoplanin, is a lipoglycopeptide antibiotic used for skin and soft tissue infections. Its long half-life of approximately 14 days makes it a potential option for sequential treatment in conditions requiring prolonged antibiotic courses. However, there is limited research and usage of dalbavancin. This article reviews the available literature on the use of dalbavancin for infective endocarditis caused by Gram-positive organisms, showing an overall clinical efficacy of approximately 90% and good tolerability.

Summary: This study describes the characteristics and prognosis of IE patients with and without DM and analyzes the prognostic relevance of DM-related organ damage. The results show that patients with DM have higher in-hospital and one-year mortality rates. DM is independently associated with a poor prognosis, particularly in the case of DM with organ damage.

Summary: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a diverse disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. It can affect native valves, prosthetic valves, and intra-cardiac devices, causing systemic complications. Early diagnosis and risk stratification of IE rely on a combination of clinical, laboratory, and cardiac imaging evaluation. Various imaging modalities, including transthoracic echocardiography and advanced techniques such as cardiac computed tomography and F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, play important roles in providing essential diagnostic and prognostic information for IE.

Summary: This report describes a case of subacute infective endocarditis caused by the rare pathogen Lodderomyces elongisporus in a 58-year-old woman. The infection was confirmed through blood fungal culture and whole-genome sequencing. The patient was treated with antifungals, mitral replacement, and endocardial vegetation removal surgery.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the characteristics and outcomes of children undergoing surgery for infective endocarditis (IE) between 2004 and 2020. The results showed that IE in children is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The presence of congenital heart disease complicates management. The surgical mortality rate was 6.4%, and the rate of post-operative recurrent IE was 10.6%. The 1-year and 5-year survival rates were 93.6% and 89.4%, respectively. Therefore, children with IE can undergo surgery with acceptable results.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the surgical management outcomes of mycotic/infective native aortic aneurysms (INAA) and provided comprehensive data. The results showed significant mortality and low re-infection rate in the surgical treatment of INAA. The study also found an association between chronic kidney disease and in-hospital mortality.

Summary: The hemodynamic performance and 30-day clinical outcomes of the balloon-expandable Myval THV in low-risk AS patients were favorable, with no major complications or procedural deaths. Summary: The study found that patients with left-sided infective endocarditis complicated by congestive heart failure tend to be older, have more comorbidities, and more severe valve damage, leading to significantly higher 30-day and 1-year mortality rates. Early surgery is strongly associated with lower mortality but is only performed on approximately half of these patients.

Summary: Propofol infusion syndrome (PRIS) is a rare but serious condition that can cause cardiogenic shock. Mitochondrial toxicity and sympathetic blockade are the mechanisms leading to cardiogenic shock in PRIS. Diagnosis and treatment of PRIS can be challenging, and further examinations such as muscle biopsy and fat enzyme analysis are helpful in confirming the diagnosis. Withdrawal of propofol and supportive therapies, such as VA-ECMO, are the preferred treatment for severe PRIS, which can increase survival rate by serving as a bridge to recovery.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of commissural alignment (CA) for balloon-expandable transcatheter heart valves. The relationship between native commissures and neocommissures was analyzed in 10 patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation. In silico bio-modelling was used to predict CA and the calculated rotation was applied during crimping. The results showed that patient-specific rotation based on preprocedural computed tomography analysis is feasible and associated with successful CA and absence of coronary overlap.

Summary: A recent prospective study found that COVID-19 patients experience significant reductions in cholesterol levels and increased oxidative stress during the course of the disease. Lipid peroxidation was found to be associated with alterations in lipid profiles and inflammation. Survivors of COVID-19 showed recovery in their lipid profiles during long-term follow-up, but those with higher oxidative responses developed atherogenic lipid profiles.

Summary: The market for wrist-worn devices is growing rapidly, but there is a lack of research on their accuracy in different populations and activities. This study compared heart rate measurements of four popular wrist-worn devices and found that they were reasonably accurate at low activity levels, but tended to underestimate heart rate values during intense physical effort. It is essential to evaluate wrist-worn wearable technology in order to fully understand its impact on psychological and physical health, especially during high-intensity exercise.

Summary: There are differences between men and women in the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of aortic stenosis (AS). Women undergo aortic valve intervention (AVI) at a later stage than men, resulting in a higher frequency of heart failure readmissions during the follow-up period, but overall mortality is not increased.
