Results of measures of X-ray diffraction showed a sequence of chemical and structural changes such as dehydration, decomposition and formation of new phases in clays subjected to gradual increases in temperature. The components of the samples were determined identifying Ca-montmorillonite, vermiculite, muscovite, kaolinite, chlorita, illite, quartz and albite. The structural refinement by the Rietveld method reported the presence of a higher percentage of non-expansive clay compared to the expansive in all samples. At 250 degrees C, Ca-montmorillonite presents a drastic decrease in its interlayer distance, from 1.5 nm to 1.0 nm, due to removal of water from the surface and pores, as well as of water contained in the interlayer region. In the case of vermiculite, this decrease is much smaller (similar to 0.04 nm), while kaolinite does not present significant decrease in this parameter. Vermiculite structurally collapses to similar to 350 degrees C, whereas kaolinite makes it to similar to 500 degrees C, while new phases appear, such as orthoclase and anorthite.

Summary: This study introduces a new application of MoO3 combined with carbon paste to prepare a microcomposite electrode for the simultaneous determination of PCM and AR. The electrode shows enhanced sensitivity and stability, with low detection limits and relative standard deviations. The performance of the electrode in terms of stability, shelf life, and potential interferences is also evaluated with positive results.

Structural changes in clays subjected to heat treatment: an analysis by structural refinement using the Rietveld method

Summary: This study analyzed clays from quarries in the Cerro de Pasco region, Peru, evaluating their characteristics and the structural changes produced by heating, particularly in the interlaminar region. Different mineral phases were identified, with significant structural changes found in Ca-montmorillonite and kaolinite. Illite showed greater thermal stability, while quartz phase slightly increased its weight percentage with increasing temperature.
