Carrageenans are abundant and safe non-starch polysaccharides exerting their biological effects in living organisms. Apart from their known pro-inflammation properties and some pharmacological activity, carrageenans can also strongly bind and hold metal ions. This property can be used for creation of the new drugs for elimination of metals from the body or targeted delivery of these metal ions for healing purposes. Metal binding activity of different carrageenans in aqueous solutions containing Y3+ or Pb2+ ions was studied in a batch sorption system. The metal uptake by carrageenans is not affected by the change of the pH within the range from 2.0 to 6.0. The rates and binding capacities of carrageenans regarding metal ions were evaluated. The Langmuir, Freundlich and BET sorption models were applied to describe the isotherms and constants, and the sorption isothermal data could be explained well by the Langmuir equation. The results obtained through the study suggest that kappa-, iota-, and lambda-carrageenans are favorable sorbents. The largest amount of Y3+ and Pb2+ ions are bound by iota-carrageenan. Therefore, it can be concluded that this type of polysaccharide is the more appropriate substance for elaboration of the drugs with high selective metal binding properties.

Antonina Klimenko, Robin Huber, Laurence Marcourt, Estelle Chardonnens, Alexey Koval, Yuri S. Khotimchenko, Emerson Ferreira Queiroz, Jean-Luc Wolfender, Vladimir L. Katanaev

Summary: The discovery of a novel cytotoxic porphyrin compound with potential anti-TNBC activity from the ethanol extract of the North Pacific brittle star Ophiura sarsii may lead to the development of targeted natural-based therapies for breast cancer. The compound, (3S,4S)-14-Ethyl-9-(hydroxymethyl)-4,8,13,18-tetramethyl-20-oxo-3-phorbinepropanoic acid, was isolated using a bioguided approach and possesses strong cytotoxic properties. Porphyrins have not been previously identified in Ophiuroidea and have wide applications in anticancer photodynamic therapy.

Summary: This study traced the clonal diversity of trematode larvae using the SAFLP method and identified repetitive elements in the genome and transcriptome data. The majority of sequenced fragments contained the reverse transcriptase domain of LINEs, with the discovery of a new CR1-renegade (CR1-rng) fragment as well. The discussion around the role of CR1 in clonal diversity was also highlighted in the findings.

Summary: The study reviews the outcomes of screening studies of natural compounds with high anti-glioma activity, emphasizing the potential for greater diversity of marine compounds and likelihood of finding effective molecules. It covers the main problems of glioma chemotherapy and provides information on at least 15 classes of organic compounds with their chemical formulas and pharmacokinetic profiles. The taxonomic diversity of marine species containing bioactives with antiglioma activity is analyzed, noting cytotoxicity indicators and comparing them to similar indicators of antitumor agents for clinical use.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a powerful anticancer treatment that relies on the use of photosensitizers. This study identifies ETPA as a major metabolite of the North Pacific brittle stars and demonstrates its strong phototoxicity against cancer cell lines in vitro. In a mouse model of glioblastoma, ETPA injection combined with red laser irradiation induces necrotic ablation of the brain tumor.

Summary: In this study, kappa o- and lambda o- oligosaccharides from the marine algae Chondrus armatus were isolated, purified and structurally characterized. The tumor suppressive activity of these carrageenans was examined in gastrointestinal cancer models, showing pronounced antiproliferative effects and cell cycle inhibition in cancer cells. Furthermore, the carrageenans induced apoptosis in adenocarcinomas. These results highlight the potential of kappa o- and lambda o- carrageenans for drug development in colon and esophageal carcinoma.
