Research priorities are established to identify gaps and maximise opportunities in developing an evidence base. Numerous postgraduate research theses are undertaken each year within the specialist area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and although some are published, greater potential for influence exists. This paper identifies international research priorities for postgraduate theses developed using a consensual Delphi process. A purposive sample included course tutors and expert clinicians nominated by Member Organisations of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (N = 91). Round I requested > 10 priorities for theses, and content analysis identified research themes. Round 2 requested participants rank the importance of each theme on a 1-5 scale, and round 3 requested ranking the importance and feasibility of the research question areas within each agreed theme. Descriptive analysis and use of Kendall's coefficient of concordance enabled interpretation of consensus. The response rate of 68% was good, identifying 23 research themes in round 1. Round 2 identified 14 research themes as important. Participant rating of the importance and feasibility of research question areas in round 3 supported 43 agreed priorities demonstrating good measurement validity. Establishing priorities provides a vision of how postgraduate theses can contribute to the developing evidence base and offer a focus for international collaboration. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Accuracy and quality of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) Registry - Ankle Arthrodesis Pathway

Jadhakhan Feroz, Makwana Nilesh, Mason Lyndon, Halliwell Paul, Rushton Alison

Summary: This study investigated the completeness, accuracy, quality, and clinical outcomes of the BOFAS registry - Ankle Arthrodesis pathway. The findings suggest potential effectiveness of surgery in reducing pain intensity, improving walking/standing ability, and social interaction. However, there were difficulties in obtaining representative data sets and the completeness of data collection was disappointing.

Individuals' beliefs about the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to their chronic musculoskeletal pain: protocol for a qualitative study in the UK

Michael Dunn, Alison B. Rushton, Andrew Soundy, Nicola R. Heneghan

Summary: This study aims to understand individuals' beliefs and perceptions about the biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to the development and maintenance of chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP). Qualitative research, using interpretative phenomenological analysis and semi-structured interviews, will be conducted to explore patient beliefs, the relationship between their biopsychosocial experiences and CMP, and the origins of their beliefs. The study findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at conferences.

Immediate patient perceptions following lumbar spinal fusion surgery: semi-structured multi-centre interviews exploring the patient journey and experiences of lumbar fusion surgery (FuJourn)

Summary: This qualitative study aimed to understand the patient journey and experiences of Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery (LSFS). Through interviews and analysis of patient narratives, four main themes were identified: decision for surgery, coping strategies, barriers to recovery, and recovery after surgery. These themes are interrelated and influence the process of an individual patient's recovery.

Exploration of mentor and mentee perspectives of a mentored clinical practice programme to improve patient outcomes in musculoskeletal physiotherapy

Aled Williams, Ceri J. Phillips, Alison Rushton

Summary: This study explores a mentoring program for clinicians in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and identifies key factors that contribute to improved patient outcomes. The study finds that the mentor's knowledge, additional perspectives, critical analysis, and facilitatory style, as well as the mentee's motivation, openness to criticism, and commitment to reflection, are enabling factors in mentored clinical practice. However, potential threats to mentee development, such as overloading or contradictory feedback, lack of relationship with mentors, fear, defensiveness, routine working, people-pleasing, and lack of experience, were also identified. Overall, the study provides a model that demonstrates how these themes interact and offers guidance to optimize the effectiveness of mentored clinical practice.

Physical activity, sedentary behaviour and well-being: experiences of people with knee and hip osteoarthritis

Archontissa M. Kanavaki, Alison Rushton, Elizabeth Hale, Rainer Klocke, Abhishek Abhishek, Joan L. Duda

Summary: Living with knee and hip osteoarthritis presents challenges in physical activity and sedentary behavior. A study found that individuals with OA value mobility and actively negotiate their activity levels and sedentary behavior in relation to the burden of the disease, their sense of well-being, and life circumstances. The findings highlight the importance of addressing personal values and concerns around safety and trade-offs when promoting a physically active lifestyle in this population.

Active behavioural physiotherapy intervention for acute non-specific neck pain: a cluster randomised double-blind pilot and feasibility clinical trial

Taweewat Wiangkham, Sureeporn Uthaikhup, Weerapong Chidnok, Alison Rushton

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of an active behavioural physiotherapy intervention (ABPI) and procedures to prevent the transition to chronicity in patients with acute non-specific neck pain (ANSNP). The results showed that the ABPI demonstrated better improvement in symptoms and function compared to standard physiotherapy intervention (SPI), with fewer treatment sessions and lower management costs.

Predictors of poor outcome following lumbar spinal fusion surgery: a prospective observational study to derive two clinical prediction rules using British Spine Registry data

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop clinical prediction rules for lumbar spinal fusion surgery (LSFS) to identify patients with a favorable outcome. The results showed that pre-operative factors such as BMI, ODI, leg and back pain, and previous surgery are important considerations for surgery decision-making, while pre-operative leg and back pain and work status are important considerations for postoperative management decisions. These findings can inform clinical decision-making regarding LSFS and associated rehabilitation.

Content validity of the Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire (SRS-22r): A qualitative concept elicitation study

Samia Alamrani, Adrian Gardner, Deborah Falla, Emily Russell, Alison B. B. Rushton, Nicola R. R. Heneghan

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the content validity of Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised (SRS-22r) for assessing the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of adolescents with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In-depth semi-structured interviews revealed that the SRS-22r does not adequately capture important concepts related to the HRQOL of AIS patients. These findings support the need for revising the SRS-22r or developing a new patient-reported outcome measure to evaluate the HRQOL of adolescents with AIS.
