Our purpose was to correlate atherogenic low wall shear stress (WSS) and high oscillatory shear index (OSI) with the localization of aortic plaques. Flow-sensitive four-dimensional MRI was used to acquire three-dimensional blood flow in the aorta of 62 patients with proven aortic atherosclerosis and 31 healthy volunteers. Multiplanar data analysis of WSS magnitude and OSI in 12 wall segments was performed in analysis planes distributed along the aorta. Disturbed WSS and OSI were defined as areas exposed to low WSS magnitude and high 051 beyond individual 15% thresholds. Planewise analysis revealed a good correlation (r = 0.85) of individual low WSS magnitude but not of high OSI with plaque distribution. Although plaques occurred only rarely in the ascending aorta, the incidence of low WSS magnitude and high OSI was similar to findings in other aortic segments where plaques occurred more frequently. Case-by-case comparisons of plaque location and critical wall parameters revealed a shift of atherogenic WSS magnitude (78% of all cases) and OSI (91%) to wall segments adjacent to the atheroma. Our results indicate that the predictive value of WSS for plaque existence depends on the aortic segment and that locations of critical wall parameters move to neighboring segments of regions affected by atherosclerosis. Neuropsychologic Profiles and Cerebral Glucose Metabolism in Neurocognitive Long COVID Syndrome

Andrea Dressing, Tobias Bormann, Ganna Blazhenets, Nils Schroeter, Lea Walter, Johannes Thurow, Dietrich August, Hanna Hilger, Katarina Stete, Kathrin Gerstacker, Susan Arndt, Alexander Rau, Horst Urbach, Siegbert Rieg, Dirk Wagner, Cornelius Weiller, Philipp T. Meyer, Jonas A. Hosp

Summary: During the long-term phase after COVID-19 infection, patients may experience cognitive deficits and fatigue. In this study, cognitive testing and brain glucose metabolism imaging showed minor impairments in cognitive domains and no distinct pathological changes. This differs from previous findings in subacute COVID-19 patients and may be related to the high prevalence of fatigue.

Speech apraxia and oral apraxia: association or dissociation? A multivariate lesion-symptom mapping study in acute stroke patients

Martina Conterno, Dorothee Kuemmerer, Andrea Dressing, Volkmar Glauche, Horst Urbach, Cornelius Weiller, Michel Rijntjes

Summary: The study found that speech apraxia and oral apraxia often co-occur, predominantly associated with insular lesions, while isolated speech apraxia is linked to frontal lesions and isolated oral apraxia is related to temporoparietal or striatocapsular region lesions.

Summary: Complicated nonstenosing carotid artery plaques (CAPs) are an underestimated cause of stroke. This study aimed to determine the association between complicated CAP ipsilateral to acute ischemic anterior circulation stroke (icCAP) and recurrent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The study found that patients with icCAP had a higher frequency of recurrent events, and a ruptured fibrous cap and intraplaque hemorrhage were significantly associated with an increased risk of recurrence.

The Role of Ascending Ventral-Tegmental Fibers for Recovery after Stroke

Summary: This study explores the role of the dopaminergic ventral tegmental midbrain nuclei-motor cortex (VTMC) tract in post-stroke recovery. The study found that both the VTMC tract and the corticospinal tract (CST) degenerate after stroke, but only the degeneration of the VTMC tract is associated with lesion size. Regression analysis showed that changes in VTMC tract integrity are more strongly related to independence in daily activities, upper limb motor impairment, and cortical symptoms compared to CST, which is mainly associated with the degree of hemiparesis.

Speaking in gestures: Left dorsal and ventral frontotemporal brain systems underlie communication in conducting

Mariacristina Musso, Eckart Altenmueller, Marco Reisert, Jonas Hosp, Ralf Schwarzwald, Bettina Blank, Julian Horn, Volkmar Glauche, Christoph Kaller, Cornelius Weiller, Martin Schumacher

Summary: Conducting is a well-structured system used to convey information about the rhythm and dynamic of a musical piece. Conductors communicate the musical tempo to the orchestra, creating a unified and expressive musical gestalt. This study found that conducting activates specific regions of the brain, including the supplementary and premotor cortex, superior temporal gyrus, and Broca's area, which are involved in sensorimotor mapping and language processing.

An evolution of low-field strength MRI

Juergen Hennig

Summary: The paper details the evolution of low-field MRI from its inception to present day, focusing on the differences in research environments. In the early 90s, the lack of reasonable means to compensate for the difference in signal-to-noise ratio between 0.5 and 1.5 T resulted in the disappearance of low-field systems. However, advancements in hardware, RF receiver systems, faster gradients, flexible sampling schemes, and the integration of AI have made low-field MRI a clinically viable supplement. Additionally, ultralow-field MRI with magnets around 0.05 T has emerged as an endeavor to bring MRI to underserved communities.

Summary: This study compared the performance of a Deep Neural Patchwork (DNP) with other established segmentation algorithms in accurately delineating atrophic structures in multiple system atrophy (MSA), Parkinson's disease (PD), and healthy controls. The results showed that DNP had significantly better performance in delineating the putamen compared to other algorithms, and it also demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing MSA, PD, and healthy controls.
