Chiral photonics deals with enantioselective polarization control of linear and nonlinear optical functions and holds a great promise for a wide range of applications including optical signal processing, biosensing and chiral bioimaging. Development of chiral materials with optical activity exceeding that of natural materials therefore becomes a prerequisite to,realizing the full potential of this field. Herein, we report on a study of structure-property relations of two chiral polymers with ester functional groups in lateral branch. To enhance rotational strength, the macroscopic measure of chirality, we employ a fluorene-quinoxaline motif in the monomer unit. To the best of our knowledge, we find the optical activity of one of the studied polymers to be the highest reported so far. Theoretical calculations reveal a correlation between the topological conformations and the simulated CD spectra in agreement with the experimental measurements and help clarify the mechanism of optical activity enhancement that could create insight for further enhancement of chirality.

Viscosity-induced dual-emission of europium ions containing metallopolymer

Summary: The study presents a hybrid structure polymer complexed with europium ions, exhibiting luminescence sensitive to viscous chemical environments. The material shows dual-emission profile with red luminescence in DMF and DMSO, and blue emission in chloroform and toluene. DMSO and DMF are suggested to restrict intramolecular motion/rotation, minimizing non-radioactive energy losses and promoting europium luminescence.

Blending as a Strategy to Attain Chiro-Optically Activity Polymers

Ana Paula Glislere, Denis Turchetti, Bruno Nowacki, Cristiano Zanlorenzi, Leni Akcelrud

Summary: Study on two copolymers, one with a chiral center and another without any asymmetric site, showed that pure polymers did not exhibit any chiro-optical activity. However, blends containing the achiral component displayed significant chiro-optical activity, attributed to stable supramolecular structures unaffected by blend composition. This suggests that utilizing supramolecular morphology can be a key strategy in achieving chiro-optical active polymers.

Summary: This research analyzed the crystallites of poly(9,9'-dihexylfluorene) (PHF) and found orthorhombic unit cells with average crystallite sizes of 43.86 angstrom, spherical nanoparticles morphology with average diameters of 69.20 nm, and a possible relationship between the fluorescent properties and the parallel alignment of the chains in the crystallites.

Emerson C. G. Campos, Denis A. Turchetti, Cristiano Zanlorenzi, Raquel A. Domingues, Luis G. T. A. Duarte, Teresa D. Z. Atvars, Leni Akcelrud

Summary: The work explores the solvent effects on the photophysical properties of a terbium copolymer, indicating that the terbium emission is sensitive to the chemical environment and that an aggregation-induced emission phenomenon may occur in certain solvents. Theoretical studies suggest that the DMSO environment may optimize the energy transfer to the terbium ion.

Magnetic Properties of a Polyfluorene Derivative Metallopolymer Containing Neodymium Ions

Alisson J. Santana, Denis A. Turchetti, Cristiano Zanlorenzi, Jose C. R. dos Santos, Adilson J. A. de Oliveira, Leni Akcelrud

Summary: This study investigates the magnetic properties of a polyfluorene derivative and its complexes with neodymium ions, showing that the introduction of Nd atoms leads to paramagnetic behavior in the polymer. The research also demonstrates the significant role of morphology, with polymer forms containing smaller salt ligands exhibiting enhanced magnetic properties compared to those with bulky beta-diketone groups.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and optical properties of a novel hybrid nanocomposite of poly(9,9′-dihexyfluorene) and europium oxide nanoparticles

Andre A. Ferreira, Denis A. Turchetti, Alisson J. Santana, Leni C. Akcelrud, Karina de Paula, Yvonne P. Mascarenhas

Summary: This research synthesized a new PHF/n-Eu2O3 nanocomposite and characterized its crystalline structures and morphologies. The results showed that the unit cells and crystallite size of the nanocomposite could be obtained through XRD analysis. The optical properties of the nanocomposite were found to be correlated with the ordering of the polymer chains, crystallinity, and morphology of the mixed nanoparticles.

Ultrafast Excited State Dynamics of a Fluorene Derivative Conjugated Polymer

Samylla Boazegevski, Jeferson Ferreira de Deus, Denis Augusto Turchetti, Leni Campus Akcelrud, Samim Sardar, Cosimo D'Andrea, Franco V. A. Camargo, Giulio Cerullo, Giovanni Bressan, Stephen R. Meech, Ismael A. Heisler

Summary: A detailed photophysical study was conducted on a polymer based on a fluorene derivative using ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy. The study found significant differences in the photophysical behavior of the polymer in solution and as a film, suggesting a near absence of self-collapsed chain conformations in solution. In the film, interchain interactions promote efficient energy transfer, resulting in faster excited state relaxation compared to solution. The time scales of exciton dynamics revealed in this study are useful for designing blends for optoelectronic and electro-optical devices.
