Summary: A series of carbazole amide derivatives were synthesized with different lengths of n-alkyl chains, showing that the parity of the alkyl chains had a significant impact on their photophysical behaviors. Compounds with even-numbered alkyl chains exhibited efficient mechanoluminescence and strong room temperature phosphorescence, while odd-numbered counterparts showed no mechanoluminescence and inferior phosphorescence. The observation of this parity effect on the mechanoluminescence property in this work is a novel finding.

Summary: The study presents a novel class of alkylated NDIs for the precise functionalization of HOPG with double lamellar morphologies, showing the unexpected disturbance of odd-even effect in the self-assembled monolayers. The results suggest that increasing the length of the alkyl spacer enhances the conformational freedom of molecules while maintaining a double lamellar morphology.

Summary: The study showed that mechanoresponsive bisamide substituted diacetylenes can switch between light-inert and light-reactive states under certain pressure, related to pressure-induced crystalline phase transition. The research found that the odd/even parity of terminal alkyl spacer length plays a key role in determining the intrinsic intermolecular hydrogen-bonding nature of DA crystals and the resultant molecular packing.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of substrate type (gold or silver) and surface roughness on the odd-even effect in n-alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers using vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. An inverted odd-even effect is observed for SAMs on silver substrates compared to those on gold substrates. The analysis of the SFG spectra provides insights into the cant angle and molecular twist dependence of interfacial group orientation. The results suggest that metal substrate roughness affects the odd-even methyl orientation anisotropy.

Summary: In this study, a high-order multiphoton activity was achieved by the supramolecular assembly of bovine serum albumin with a series of metal-free photosensitizers. The odd-even effect of alkyl chains provided a new idea for developing multi-photon photosensitized materials. Among them, TPA-7C@BSA exhibited the largest three-photon absorption cross section and effectively executed NIR-II PDT towards H22-tumor.

Summary: A mathematical-chemical approach using alkyl biradicals is used to enumerate isomers of different hydrocarbon compounds. The method involves a non-recursive enumeration algorithm and Diophantine equation to calculate the number of constitutional isomers. The algorithm does not require previous data and has shown interesting characteristics of hydrocarbon isomer series, including the erroneous conjecture for symmetrical methyl alkanes and the equivalence between even and odd isomer series of symmetrical methyl alkanes.

Summary: This study focuses on the two-dimensional self-assemblies of curcumin derivatives. The effects of the number, length, and substitution of the alkyl chains on the 2D structures of curcumin derivatives were investigated. It was found that curcumin derivatives with methoxy and alkoxy chain groups exhibit different linear structures, while those with four alkoxy chains do not have interdigitation structures. Furthermore, the alkyl chain length was found to have an odd-even effect on the structure of bisdemethoxycurcumin derivatives.

Summary: The study reports the mixture behavior of three fluorenone derivatives at the liquid-solid interface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The mixing ratio mainly determines the binary outcomes, with F-C13C13 showing a stronger ability to dominate patterning compared to F-C12C12, and an odd-even effect exists in the system.

Summary: This article reports a series of alkyl-substituted dual-state luminogens with extremely high solid-state fluorescence quantum yield and a pronounced odd-even effect. The odd-even effect reaches a maximum difference of 48% between compounds with methyl and ethyl substitution. Additionally, odd-even effects were also observed in melting point and decomposition temperature.
