Catalyst-transfer Suzuki-Miyaura coupling polymerization of 2,5-bis(hexyloxy)-4-iodophenylboronic acid (1b) with Bu3PPd(Ph)Br (2) was investigated. When 1b was polymerized with 2 at 0 degrees C in the presence of 4 equiv of CsF, 8 equiv of 18-crown-6, and a small amount of water (to dissolve CsF), poly-(p-phenylene) (poly1b) with a narrow molecular weight distribution was obtained. The conversion-number average molecular weight (M-n) and feed ratio-M-n relationships indicate that this polymerization proceeded in a chain-growth polymerization manner. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectra showed that poly1b with moderate molecular weight uniformly had a phenyl group, derived from 2, at one end of each polymer chain and a hydrogen atom at the other, indicating involvement of a catalyst-transfer mechanism. However, the molecular weight distribution of the polymer gradually became broader with increase of the feed ratio of 1b to 2, and polymer chains with other end groups were formed. Successive catalyst-transfer Suzuki-Miyaura coupling polymerization of 2-(7-bromo-9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane (3) and then 1b yielded a well-defined block copolymer of polyfluorene and poly(p-phenylene).

Importance of a reversible reaction for the synthesis of telechelic polymers by means of polycondensation using an excess of one monomer

Summary: Reversible polycondensation through an alkoxide-catalyzed ester-ester exchange reaction is an effective strategy for synthesizing telechelic polymers free from contamination with cyclic polymers. The use of an exchange reagent can lead to telechelic polymers with multiple functional end-groups, while the conventional polycondensation route often results in cyclic polymers formation.

Functionalization of poly(methyl acrylate) with formate esters and polyester through ester-ester exchange reaction

Summary: This study investigated the ester-ester exchange reaction of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) with alkyl formate or polyester catalyzed by alkoxide. The results showed that different groups could be efficiently introduced into PMA through the transesterification reaction. In addition, a method for preparing graft copolymers by polycondensation and ester exchange reaction was explored.

Summary: We described a method of synthesizing polycarbonate through ester-carbonate exchange reaction, and achieving the exchange reaction between PC and other polymers under specific conditions. The composition of PC and PEs in the copolymer can be adjusted, and increasing polymerization degree leads to higher melting temperature of the copolymer.

Synthesis of cyclic polymers containing various backbones by means of non-stoichiometric Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation through intramolecular catalyst transfer

Tsuyoshi Namekawa, Hajime Sugita, Yoshihiro Ohta, Tsutomu Yokozawa

Summary: Cyclic polymers with different backbones were selectively synthesized using a non-stoichiometric Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation reaction. This reaction involved the use of 1.0 equivalent of diboronate monomers containing carbon-carbon double bond (C=C), ester, ether, and carbonate linkages with 1.3 equivalents of meta- or para-dibromophenylene, in the presence of t-Bu3PPd G2 precatalyst and CsF/18-crown-6 as a base. The obtained cyclic polymers showed an increase in molecular weight with increasing monomer concentration. The presence of C=C bonds in the polymer was confirmed even at high molecular weights through end-group analysis after a degradative cross-metathesis reaction.

Intramolecular Palladium Catalyst Transfer on Benzoheterodiazoles as Acceptor Monomers and Discovery of Catalyst Transfer Inhibitors

Summary: This study investigates intramolecular catalyst transfer on benzoheterodiazoles in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions and polymerization reactions. It is found that the Pd catalyst undergoes intramolecular transfer on dibromobenzotriazole, whereas intermolecular transfer occurs in part in the case of dibromobenzoxazole and is predominant for dibromobenzothiadiazole. In the polymerization reactions, different benzoheterodiazoles react with phenylenediboronates to produce high-molecular-weight polymer and cyclic polymer, with dibromobenzoxazole resulting in a moderate-molecular-weight polymer with bromine at both ends.

Summary: The ester-ester exchange reaction proved to be faster than the ester-alcohol exchange reaction, leading to the successful synthesis of high-molecular-weight polyesters under various conditions.
