Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a neurohormone related to a broad array of physiological functions and proven therapeutic properties. Some foods also contain melatonin and their consumption has been considered as an exogenous source, able to increase melatonin circulating levels. In the present work, two well-known pomegranate cultivars, Wonderful and Mollar de Elche, as well as a Coupage of both varieties were assayed for wine elaboration. Melatonin was observed to be absent in pomegranates juices although it was detected for the first time in prominent amounts with respect to other food matrixes (0.54-5.50 ng/mL) for all the varietal wines. Thus, the occurrence of this biogenic amine points out these fruit wines as an interesting way for bioactive phytochemicals supplementation. Moreover, the influence of cultivar and winemaking process on the melatonin content of the finished product has been studied. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Giuseppe Di Pede, Pedro Mena, Letizia Bresciani, Rosa M. Lamuela-Raventos, Mariem Achour, Ramon Estruch, Rikard Landberg, Sabine E. Kulling, David Wishart, Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, Alan Crozier, Claudine Manach, Daniele Del Rio

Summary: This systematic review summarizes human studies on the absorption, metabolism, distribution and excretion of dietary flavan-3-ols and their metabolites. Forty-nine intervention studies were included, and up to 180 metabolites were quantified in blood and urine samples after flavan-3-ol intake. The main compounds detected were phase 2 conjugates of microbial catabolites, with phenyl-gamma-valerolactones being the most representative ones. The bioavailability of flavan-3-ols was moderate, and it showed intra- and inter-source differences.

A Phytoprostane from Gracilaria longissima Increases Platelet Activation, Platelet Adhesion to Leukocytes and Endothelial Cell Migration by Potential Binding to EP3 Prostaglandin Receptor

Silvia Montoro-Garcia, Sara Martinez-Sanchez, Miguel Carmena-Bargueno, Horacio Perez-Sanchez, Maria Campillo, Camille Oger, Jean-Marie Galano, Thierry Durand, Angel Gil-Izquierdo, Jose Antonio Gabaldon

Summary: The effects of 9-D1t-PhytoP on platelet activation and vascular cells were tested, along with possible interactions with platelets and the endothelial EP3 receptor. The results showed that 9-D1t-PhytoP has prothrombotic and wound-healing properties, and mimics the migration stimulus of PGE(2) in endothelial cells. Computational analysis revealed its potential as an EP3 agonist by forming a stable complex with the EP3 receptor.

Summary: Kitul (Caryota urens L.) inflorescences are widely used for sweet sap production in Asian countries and have potential antidiabetic properties. In this study, the methanol extract of the inflorescences was shown to reduce reactive species in pancreatic cells and inflammatory markers in stimulated macrophages. The extract also inhibited 5-lipoxygenase activity. These findings suggest that Kitul inflorescences may have pleiotropic mechanisms as an antidiabetic agent.

Bioactive Compounds of Broccoli Florets as Affected by Packing Micro-Perforations and Storage Temperature

Erika Paulsen, Diego A. Moreno, Domingo Martinez-Romero, Cristina Garcia-Viguera

Summary: The impact of perforation-mediated modified atmosphere packaging (PM-MAP) on broccoli florets was studied at different temperature scenarios. PM-MAP slightly altered the composition of O-2 and CO2, preserving the external quality and bioactive compounds of florets for 21 days, even at 7 degrees C. The level of perforation affected the evolution of firmness and glucosinolate content, especially with increasing temperature. Therefore, the perforation level should be considered in the design of packaging for fresh-cut products.
