Summary: This study investigated remission in pediatric-onset SLE. Up to 60.2% of patients achieved clinical remission after treatment, with 19% of patients achieving remission off GCs. Long-term remission is rarer in pediatric-onset SLE than in adult-onset SLE.

Summary: This is a rare case report of twin boys simultaneously developing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The brothers, who are monozygotic twins, developed different autoimmune symptoms at the age of 11. This situation may involve a monogenic origin of the disease. Further research is needed to confirm the causative role of the mutation.

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with complex clinical features. SLE patients are at significantly increased risk of thrombotic events. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent thrombosis and pregnancy-related complications. This paper reports a school-age patient diagnosed with SLE coexisting with APS, which started with renal contusion and later developed into pulmonary embolism.

Summary: Involvement of the upper airway in the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease process is uncommon, but can lead to severe complications such as acute tracheal necrosis. Prompt airway evaluation and treatment are crucial for the recovery of SLE patients with rare upper airway involvement.

Summary: Pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disorder with a highly variable course and prognosis. The use of immunosuppressive therapies and underlying comorbidities increase the risk of severe COVID-19 and poor outcomes in pediatric SLE patients. This review analyzes newly diagnosed cases of pediatric SLE following COVID-19 and examines the impact of COVID-19 on patients with existing pediatric SLE.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of 2-year trajectories of C3 variability in predicting clinical remission and SCS use in pediatric patients with pSLE. The results showed that different C3 trajectories were associated with different clinical outcome groups, with patients in trajectory 1 at a higher risk for persistent SCS use. Therefore, early initiation of immunosuppressants and biological agents may be considered for these children.

Summary: This study identified significantly elevated levels of IL-2, IL-10, and IL-21 in cSLE patients compared to healthy controls, with a positive correlation to disease activity. This suggests potential new approaches for regulating T lymphocyte subsets in cSLE diagnosis.

Summary: This study investigated the pharmacokinetics of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in pediatric patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The results showed that HCQ blood concentration was associated with disease activity and could serve as a significant predictor of disease status.

Summary: Patients with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus are at risk of becoming short adults, with independent risk factors including male sex, short stature at diagnosis, low body weight at final height, and cumulative corticosteroid dose. Adequate nutrition and corticosteroid minimization should be emphasized in patients at high risk for short final height.

Summary: Healthcare disparities are present in the United States, with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) affecting racial and ethnic minority groups to a greater extent. Studies have shown that these groups are more likely to experience complications such as lupus nephritis, antiphospholipid syndrome, and thrombocytopenia.

Summary: This case study presents a 13.3-year-old female SLE patient with multifocal ON of the knee joint, the youngest reported in literature. The patient showed significant improvement with high-dose methylprednisolone and intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapies, along with oral calcitriol and dipyridamole administration.

Summary: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent fever, rash, arthralgia, and leukocytosis. This article presents a rare case of an 80-year-old Japanese woman who developed arthralgia, fever, and skin rash during treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which was diagnosed as an overlap of AOSD.

Summary: Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a challenging autoimmune disease that requires aggressive treatment due to its genetic background and prevalent elevated type I Interferon expression. High dose oral glucocorticoid (GC) is the standard treatment for moderate to severe cSLE, although its side effects and toxicities cannot be ignored. Recent studies have shown that GC pulse therapy can quickly achieve disease remission and reduce GC-related side effects. This article reviews the characteristics and manifestations of cSLE, and summarizes the evidence on GC therapy, particularly GC pulse therapy, in cSLE.
