Four series of mesogenic derivatives of p-carborane (series A[0] and A[1]) and their benzene analogues (series B[0] and B[1]) with variable linking groups were prepared and investigated for phase behaviour. The data allowed a comparison of the effect of the group on the mesophase stability as a function of the adjacent ring (carborane or benzene), the variable central ring (carborane or benzene), and the presence of an oxygen atom in the terminal chain. The results showed that substitution of carborane for a benzene ring in B[m] depresses the clearing point by 50K to 208 K and eliminates all smectic behaviour in A[m]. The carborane derivatives A[m] are weakly dependent (effectiveness of L: -CH=CHCOO-similar to-COO-similar to-CH=CH->-CH=N-similar to-CH2CH2->-CONH-), whereas the benzene analogues B[m] are strongly dependent (effectiveness of L: -CONH->-CH=CH->-CH=N-similar to -CH=CHCOO->-COO->-CH2CH2-) on the structure of the linking group. The difference in the effectiveness of the amide group on mesophase stability (Delta T-I=208 K) has been attributed to the stabilizing intermolecular H-bonding in B[m], which is prevented in A[m] by steric and electronic effects of the carborane cage on the carbonyl group.

Paramagnetic ionic liquid crystals: Ion conductive bent-core derivatives of stable radicals

Summary: A series of bent-core paramagnetic ionic liquid crystals containing the N-methylimidazolium group were prepared and their mesogenic, magnetic, and ion conductive properties were investigated. The ion pairs form fluid smectic phases above 100 degrees C, with ion conductivity ranging from 10(-5) to 10(-8) S cm(-1). Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed liquid-like molecular arrangement in the paramagnetic layers.

[closo-B10H8-1,10-(CN)2]2- as a Conduit of Electronic Effects: Comparative Studies of Fe•••Fe Communication in [{(η5-Cp)(dppe)Fe}2{μ2-(NC-X-CN)}]n+ (n=0, 2)

Summary: Electronic communication between Fe centers in diiron complexes with different ligands was investigated, and it was found that [closo-B10H8-1,10-diyl](2-) has the best ability among the closo-boranes to mediate electronic effects similar to those of 1,4-phenylene. This is evident from the observed separation of one-electron-oxidation waves and comparable S-T energy gaps in the doubly oxidized species.

Summary: The [closo-B10H8-1,10-(COOH)(2)](2-) was synthesized from [closo-B10H10](2-) in five steps with an overall yield of 40%. It can be converted to [closo-B10H8-1,10-(CO)(2)] and subsequently to carbonium ylides [closo-B10H8-1-COOH-10-(C(NRCH2)(2))]. Characterization was done using spectroscopic and single crystal XRD methods augmented with DFT results.

Tethered Blatter Radical for Molecular Grafting: Synthesis of 6-Hydroxyhexyloxy, Hydroxymethyl, and Bis(hydroxymethyl) Derivatives and Their Functionalization

Szymon Kapuscinski, Bindushree Anand, Paulina Bartos, Jose M. Garcia Fernandez, Piotr Kaszynski

Summary: This paper presents a synthetic method for accessing spin-labeled compounds by synthesizing 7-CF3-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl radicals containing different substituents and converting them into tosylates and phosphates. The obtained tosylates were used to obtain disulfides and azides. The Blatter radical containing an azido group showed good reactivity in a copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction, indicating its potential for grafting onto other molecular objects via the CuAAC click reaction.

Summary: Metal-containing heteraadamantanes are compounds of interest due to their spectroscopic and magnetic properties, making them promising materials for non-linear optics and semiconductors. The newly reported coordination compound crystallizes as a polynuclear metal complex with an adamantane-like core in the cubic system, containing an octahedrally coordinated iron atom in the oxidation state +3. The compound shows a high propensity for forming long-range interactions involving bridging oxygen atoms.

Summary: A series of liquid crystalline pyridinium and sulfonium derivatives with CH2CH2 linking group were prepared and their structures were determined by XRD. Thermal and dielectric properties of the series in a weakly polar nematic host were evaluated, showing that pyridinium zwitterions have the highest dielectric anisotropy. The effect of linking group on thermal and electrooptical properties was discussed.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of substituents on the photophysical properties of derivatives of [closo-B10H10](2-), revealing the significant impact of the B(10) substituent on the HOMO and the C(4) substituent on the LUMO, allowing for variation of charge transfer band energy and emission energy. Additionally, solvent effects on the photophysical properties were observed, showing a substantial degree of control over these properties through a combination of substituent and solvent effects.
