The phylogenetic placement of Collema fasciculare (L.) F. H. Wigg, the most deviating species within Collema (Collemataceae, Lecanoromycetidae), was studied using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis of three molecular loci (mitochondrial SSU rDNA, and the protein-coding, nuclear RPB1 and MCM7 genes). Collema fasciculare belongs to Arctomiaceae (Ostropomycetidae) forming a strongly supported monophyletic group with members of Arctomia. The spores, paraphyses, asci and hymenial reactions in Collema fasciculare are similar to other Arctomia, but the ascoma ontogeny is somewhat different. Also C. leptosporum Malme, another species in the Fasciculare group, shows similarities with Arctomia regarding spores and asci. Arctomia is morphologically heterogeneous and the genus is in need of revision. Until then, the species of the Fasciculare group fit best in Arctomia s. lat. and the combinations Arctomia fascicularis (L.) Otalora & Wedin, Arctomia leptospora (Malme) Otalora & Wedin, Arctomia papuanarum (Degel.) Otalora & Wedin and Arctomia uviformis (Hue) Otalora & Wedin are proposed.

Tremella macrobasidiata and Tremella variae have abundant and widespread yeast stages in Lecanora lichens

Veera Tuovinen, Ana Maria Millanes, Sandra Freire-Rallo, Anna Rosling, Mats Wedin

Summary: Dimorphism is a common feature of tremellalean fungi, with Tremella macrobasidiata and Tremella variae showing an abundant yeast stage in their life cycles associated with Lecanora lichens. The sexual filamentous stage is restricted to specific lichen species for each Tremella, while the yeast stage can be more versatile. This research suggests a wider distribution and abundance of lichen-associated Tremella than previously thought, prompting new questions about their biology and ecology in symbiosis.

A revision of the Rostania occultata (Collemataceae) complex in Fennoscandia

Alica Kosuthova, Martin Westberg, Mats Wedin

Summary: The Rostania occultata species complex in Fennoscandia has been revised and found to consist of four species that are all epiphytes on deciduous trees. This study describes two newly discovered species, Rostania effusa and R. pallida, which were found in old-growth boreal coniferous forests and subalpine birch-dominated forests in Fennoscandia.

Summary: In this study, five new species (Tremella elegantis, T. nimisiana, T. parietinae, T. pusillae, T. sorediatae) within the Tremella caloplacae complex were formally described. Three unnamed species were also identified. Furthermore, the circumscription of Tremella caloplacae was revised to include only Variospora species.

Crittendenia gen. nov., a new lichenicolous lineage in the Agaricostilbomycetes (Pucciniomycotina), and a review of the biology, phylogeny and classification of lichenicolous heterobasidiomycetes

Ana M. Millanes, Paul Diederich, Martin Westberg, Mats Wedin

Summary: This paper provides an introduction and review of lichenicolous 'heterobasidiomycetes' belonging in the Tremellomycetes and Pucciniomycotina, with a focus on recent studies and novelties of their classification, phylogeny, and evolution. Phylogenetic analyses reveal that the lichenicolous members of Chionosphaera form a monophyletic group in the Pucciniomycotina, leading to the description of the new genus Crittendenia to accommodate these species. Crittendenia, Cyphobasidium, and Lichenozyma are the only lichenicolous lineages known in the Pucciniomycotina.
