The epidemiology of splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) in the United States has not been addressed. Eight years of data (2001-2008) from 17 registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program were used for this study. Of the 116 411 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in the registries, 763 (0.6%) were SMZL. The overall annual age-adjusted incidence was 0.13 per 100 000 persons per year. The annual percent change in age-adjusted incidence was 4.81% overall (p < 0.05), and significantly increasing trends were found for patients who were white, male or aged 70 years and older (p < 0.05). The relative 5-year overall survival rate for patients with SMZL was 81% (95% confidence interval 75-86%). The incidence of SMZL was highest among whites, males and older patients. A steadily increasing trend in incidence was observed for SMZL. The relative 5-year overall survival rate was high.

A Generalized Zero-Shot Learning Scheme for SSVEP-Based BCI System

Xietian Wang, Aiping Liu, Le Wu, Chang Li, Yu Liu, Xun Chen

Summary: A generalized zero-shot learning scheme for SSVEP classification is proposed. The target classes are divided into seen and unseen classes, and the classifier is trained only using the seen classes. The EEG data and sine waves are embedded into the same latent space using convolutional neural networks, and the correlation coefficient of the two outputs in the latent space is used for classification. The proposed method achieves high accuracy on both seen and unseen classes, showing promise for building an SSVEP classification system without the need for training data of all targets.

Yongjie Cheng, Yanshuang Wang, Jianghai Lin, Shuhui Xu, Pu Zhang

Summary: The surface integrity of bearing steel materials determines the life of mechanical parts. Optimizing process parameters or using surface modification technology can improve the surface integrity. This paper reviews the evaluation parameters and characteristics of surface integrity and their impact on mechanical part performance. It summaries the effects of machining processes and surface modification technologies on parameters related to surface integrity. Two new surface modification technologies for bearing steel materials are also introduced. This paper provides research directions and theoretical references for improving the surface integrity of bearing steel material.

Preparation and properties of a double-crosslinked, high-strength polyvinyl alcohol/acylhydrazone self-healing hydrogel

Jie Mao, Yalei Liu, Lijun Chen, Sui Wang

Summary: In this study, PVA/BDA/ADH gels with excellent mechanical properties and self-healing capabilities were prepared using PVA, BDA, and ADH. The hydrogel network achieved chemical-physical double cross-linking through acylhydrazone bonds and hydrogen bonds. The resulting PVA/BDA/ADH gels exhibited superior mechanical properties and more stable self-healing properties compared to pure PVA hydrogel.

Rui Xu, Jie Liu, Wei Sun, Li Wang

Summary: In this study, the flotation behaviors and mechanisms of mixed sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS)/dodecylamine (DDA) collectors on biotite surface were systematically investigated. The results showed that the recovery of biotite increased to above 90% with the addition of mixed collectors at alkaline pH, while the recovery of quartz was below 10%.

2D MoS2 Nanosheets Induce Ferroptosis by Promoting NCOA4-Dependent Ferritinophagy and Inhibiting Ferroportin

Bingyan Liu, Wei Jiang, Yiyuan Ye, Ling Liu, Xiaoran Wei, Qiu Zhang, Baoshan Xing

Summary: This study reveals that MoS2 nanosheets induce ferroptosis in vivo and in vitro, which is caused by the nanosheet themselves rather than by the dissolved ions. MoS2 nanosheets enter the cells through macropinocytosis and localize to the lysosome, causing an increase in lysosomal membrane permeability. This leads to the activation of NCOA4-dependent ferritinophagy and the inhibition of FPN, resulting in the leakage of Fe2+ into the cytoplasm and ultimately ferroptosis. The inhibition of FPN further aggravates the overload of Fe2+ in the cell.

On variable stiffness of flexible parallel electroadhesive structures

Yingze Yuan, Fengfeng Li, Jianglong Guo, Liwu Liu, Yanju Liu, Jinsong Leng

Summary: Electrostatic layer jamming is a lightweight, low energy consumption, electrically tunable, and cost-effective variable stiffness structure. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and experimentally validated theoretical variable stiffness models for flexible parallel electroadhesive structures. This paper presents the first variable stiffness model for flexible parallel electroadhesive structures under different bending conditions, considering friction and slip between layers. The results provide useful insights for understanding the variable stiffness mechanism and optimizing the structural design for practical applications.

Kuicheng Zhao, Ruihua Xie, Zile Zhou, Shiying Chen, Xiaohua Zhu, Cuiyan Wu, Youyu Zhang, Haitao Li

Summary: Oxidative stress is closely related to crop health under stress conditions, and H2O2 serves as an important signaling molecule in plants. However, there is a lack of fluorescent probes for tracking H2O2 fluctuations in crops. In this study, a turn-on NIR fluorescent probe was designed to detect and image H2O2 in living cells and crops. The probe showed good detection performance and the ability to visualize H2O2 in cabbage roots under abiotic stress. The visualization of H2O2 upregulation in response to adverse environments provides a new method for risk-assessing oxidative stress and guiding the development of antioxidant defense strategies.

Identification of Potential Proteinaceous Ligands of GI.1 Norovirus in Pacific Oyster Tissues

Chenang Lyu, Jingwen Li, Zhentao Shi, Ran An, Yanfei Wang, Guangda Luo, Dapeng Wang

Summary: Human norovirus (HuNoV) is a major foodborne pathogen causing nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Oysters, especially GI.1 HuNoV, play a crucial role in the transmission of HuNoV. Previous studies identified oyster heat shock protein 70 (oHSP 70) as a protein ligand for GII.4 HuNoV, along with carbohydrate ligands. However, the distribution pattern did not match with GI.1 HuNoV, suggesting the presence of other ligands. In this study, protein ligands for GI.1 HuNoV were discovered in oyster tissues through a bacterial cell surface display system.

Mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet from 2013 to 2018 estimated using the input-output method with updated remote sensing products

Yuan Cheng, Gang Hai, Xiangbin Cui, Da Lv, Gang Qiao, Rongxing Li

Summary: Using satellite observations, we developed a new method to estimate the mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Our findings show that the ice sheet has been losing mass for the past 4 decades, contributing to the rise in global sea level. We estimated the mass balance from 2013 to 2018 and observed an accelerated ice loss in West Antarctica and a mass gain in East Antarctica.

Zero valent iron catalyzing sulfite improves the quality and quantity of short-chain fatty acids from anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge

Xuran Liu, Xianli Yang, Jingnan Yang, Yanxin Wu, Dongbo Wang

Summary: This study proposes an environmentally friendly strategy using zero valent iron (ZVI) activating sulfite pretreatment to enhance short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge. The results showed that ZVI-sulfite pretreatment significantly increased SCFAs production and acetate proportion. Mechanism analysis revealed that ZVI-sulfite pretreatment accelerated sludge-floc disintegration and provided more easily- and bio-available substances for functional anaerobes. The pretreatment also enriched functional anaerobes related to hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis, and boosted the functional genes abundance involved in butyrate and acetate formation pathways.
