Summary: Plants in Colombia contain compounds that have sunscreen properties. Sun protection factor (SPFin vitro) and %GI estimates were correlated, with %GI being more sensitive to detecting activity at lower plant extract concentrations. DNA damage detection assays are needed as a complement to photoprotection efficacy measurement.

Summary: The widespread use of nanoparticles leads to their presence in wastewater and landfills, posing a potential risk to the environment. However, the harmfulness of nanoparticles is still not well understood. This study examines the genotoxicity of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) using Escherichia coli bacteria and erythrocytes of Cyprinus carpio. The results indicate that Al2O3 NPs can potentially cause changes in the genetic material of the bioindicators.

Summary: Concern on the toxicity of final wastewater generated by the petroleum refining industry has increased due to potential health threats. This study found that petroleum refinery wastewater is mutagenic and genotoxic, posing risks to the environment. The substances responsible for this toxicity were identified as organic compounds and heavy metals present in the wastewater.

Summary: The study revealed that boiled water from aluminum pots contains heavy metals at concentrations above the allowable limits, with concentrations increasing as the duration of use of the pots increases. The water boiled in the aluminum pots was found to be mutagenic and genotoxic in microbial assays, with the older pots inducing higher levels of mutagenicity and genotoxicity compared to newer pots.

Summary: Mine water can cause significant changes in aquatic ecosystems and requires treatment to remove heavy metals and adjust alkalinity. This study assessed the impact of conventionally treated mine water on bacteria and found no significant genotoxic effects on Escherichia coli, with a survival rate higher than 80%. Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed more resistance to high sulfate concentrations.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant and antimutagenic activities of 16 Plectranthus species. The results showed that three plant extracts had the highest antioxidant activity, while four plant extracts exhibited strong antimutagenic properties. Overall, most of the plant extracts had both antioxidant and antimutagenic properties without a clear correlation between the two.

Summary: This study investigates the antioxidant, antigenotoxic, and antiproliferative potential of the aqueous fraction of Pterisvittata L. The results demonstrate that the PWE has strong antioxidant activity and can inhibit DNA damage and cell proliferation. These findings are beneficial for the development of functional food and provide insights into the health benefits of pteridophytes.

Summary: The study found that Prodigiosin yield in Serratia marcescens depends on the type of culture media used, and it possesses antibacterial and antigenotoxic effects under UVB radiation. The photoprotective efficacy is related to Prodigiosin concentration and the bacterial strain's antigenotoxic potential.

Summary: Humans are widely exposed to a great variety of mycotoxins and their mixtures, so it is important to prioritize mycotoxins based on their toxic potential. A strategy combining in silico tools and in vitro tests was used to classify 12 mycotoxins and evaluate their mutagenic potential, showing different mutagenic potentials and the role of metabolic activation in some mycotoxins.

Summary: Ten novel 4-TZD derivatives were synthesized and characterized in this study, and their genotoxic and antigenotoxic properties were investigated. The results showed that none of the compounds were mutagenic, and some compounds exhibited significant antigenotoxic effects against mutagen-induced DNA damage. Especially, C4 showed the best potential to inhibit the number of revertant colonies induced by 9-AA. This study provided preliminary knowledge about the safety and potential bioactivities of the synthesized 4-TZD compounds, and emphasized the importance of developing new pharmacological agents for cancer prevention.
