Peripheral nerves are structures that, when damaged, can result in significant motor and sensory disabilities. Several studies have used therapeutic resources with the aim of promoting early nerve regeneration, such as the use of low-power laser. However, this laser therapy does not represent a consensus regarding the methodology, thus yielding controversial conclusions. The objective of our study was to investigate, by functional evaluation, the comparative effects of low-power laser (660 nm and 830 nm) on sciatic nerve regeneration following crushing injuries. Twenty-seven Wistar rats subjected to sciatic nerve injury were divided into three groups: group sham, consisting of rats undergoing simulated irradiation; a group consisting of rats subjected to gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) laser at 660 nm (10 J/cm(2), 30 mW and 0.06 cm(2) beam), and another one consisting of rats subjected to GaAlAs laser at 830 nm (10 J/cm(2), 30 mW and 0.116 cm(2)). Laser was applied to the lesion for 21 days. A sciatic functional index (SFI) was used for functional evaluation prior to surgery and on days 7, 14, and 21 after surgery. Differences in SFI were found between group 660 nm and the other ones at the 14th day. One can observe that laser application at 660 nm with the parameters and methods utilised was effective in promoting early functional recovery, as indicated by the SFI, over the period evaluated.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the effects of complex physical therapy and multimodal approaches on lymphedema secondary to breast cancer. The findings suggest that complex physical therapy has favorable short-term and long-term effects in controlling lymphedema. Future research should aim to determine the specific effects of different therapeutic modalities in different time periods.

Kawano Suzuki, Maria Eloisa de Oliveira Medeiros, Joyce Silva de Santana, Fernanda Ludmilla Rossi Rocha, Marisa de Cassia Registro Fonseca

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a specific and individualized workplace strengthening exercise program combined with ergonomic guidance in reducing fatigue, pain, and discomfort in the upper extremities and neck perceived by workers. The study will assess muscle strength, pain scale, and other outcomes to analyze the differences before and after the intervention. The results of this study will provide evidence for the benefit of resistance exercise in facilitating neuro-muscular adaptations and hypertrophy in later phases.

Summary: This study analyzed the physical performance and self-perceived menstrual symptoms of physically active women with regular menstrual cycles in two phases of the menstrual cycle. The results showed that there was no significant difference in physical performance between the phases, but menstrual flow intensity and perception of cycle interference may affect physical performance.

Segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis can detect differences between the affected and non-affected limbs in individuals with hip osteoarthritis

Jocassia Silva Pinheiro, Filipe Ramos Carlos, Luis Carlos Caseiro-Filho, Celso Herminio Ferraz Picado, Flavio Luis Garcia, Elaine Caldeira de Oliveira Guirro, Rinaldo Roberto de Jesus Guirro

Summary: The objective of this study was to analyze the bioelectrical impedance parameters of the lower limbs in individuals with hip osteoarthritis and healthy individuals. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and the results showed significant differences in phase angle, impedance, and muscle mass between the affected and unaffected sides in patients with osteoarthritis. It was concluded that segmental electrical bioimpedance equipment can detect differences between limbs affected and unaffected by hip osteoarthritis.

Therapeutic ultrasound ameliorates hyperalgesia and edema on CFA-induced persistent inflammatory response in mice

Mariana Rodrigues, Rafael I. Barbosa, Lais M. S. Neves, Heloyse U. Kuriki, Elaine C. D. Goncalves, Adair R. S. Santos, Rafael C. Dutra, Alexandre M. Marcolino

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pulsed and continuous ultrasound on edema and hyperalgesia in a chronic inflammatory process. The results showed that both pulsed and continuous ultrasound reduced paw edema, with pulsed ultrasound having a greater effect. Higher irradiation frequencies were associated with inhibition of edema, while lower frequencies mainly reduced hyperalgesia. The beneficial effects of ultrasound may be attributed to the upregulation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of photobiomodulation on the physical performance of healthy women during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Twenty-seven physically active women underwent performance evaluations before and after receiving photobiomodulation therapy or sham therapy. The results showed no significant difference in performance variables between the two groups, indicating that photobiomodulation did not improve muscle performance, resistance to fatigue, perceived exertion, and blood lactate concentrations during an anaerobic test in healthy women during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.
