Summary: Open partial laryngectomies continue to be a crucial aspect of conservative management for laryngeal cancer. The European Laryngological Society presented a detailed classification of open partial horizontal laryngectomies in 2014, focusing on the main surgical steps and modular approach for tumor removal.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the motor units distribution and recruitment pattern in the spastic and non-spastic bilateral biceps brachii muscles of chronic stroke survivors. The results showed that the depth of decomposed MUs increased with the contraction force in the non-spastic muscle, indicating larger MUs with higher recruitment threshold locate in deeper muscle regions. However, no force-related difference in MU depth was observed on the spastic side, suggesting a disruption of orderly recruitment of MUs. The findings of this study advance our understanding of the neurophysiology of human muscles and the neuromuscular alterations following stroke.

Summary: In this study, we successfully created a three-dimensional bioprinted artificial larynx using rabbit's chondrocyte-laden gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/glycidyl-methacrylated hyaluronic acid (GMHA) hybrid bioink. We incorporated a polycaprolactone (PCL) outer framework with pores to provide structural strength and a suitable microenvironment for the printed cells. Our novel fluidics supply (FS) system improved cell viability during the printing process, leading to the generation of a large-scale cell-laden artificial laryngeal framework. Animal studies confirmed the functionality of the transplanted 3D bio-larynx, offering potential for clinical applications in laryngectomy patients.

Summary: This study aims to document the 10-year oncologic outcome of primary total laryngectomy (TL) for patients with cT3-4M0 endolaryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The results showed a 10-year actuarial local control estimate of 89.7%. Local recurrence significantly reduced nodal control, distant metastasis control, and survival. Postoperative complications, persistent index SCC, intercurrent disease, and metachronous second primary cancer were important factors affecting patient survival.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the immediate effects of voiced gargling on the electrical activity of extrinsic laryngeal muscles and vocal self-assessment. The results showed that voiced gargling can immediately decrease muscle activity and improve voice and phonatory comfort in most participants.

Summary: Objective United States oncology trends consistently demonstrate that nearly half of T4a larynx carcinoma patients are treated with larynx preservation, despite national guidelines favoring laryngectomy. This study identifies clinical decision-making drivers and defines patient subsets that should become targets for care improvement.

Summary: This study compared the survival outcomes of salvage vs. primary total laryngectomy in patients with locally advanced laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma and determined their predictive factors. The results showed that salvage TL had significantly worse survival rates than primary TL. The predictive factors identified here should be considered in the therapeutic decision-making, especially for salvage TL patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the TALK score and its modification tALK (including tobacco use during treatment) in predicting laryngectomy-free survival in patients undergoing chemoradiation. The results showed that tobacco use during treatment was one of the most predictive factors for survival outcomes. Additionally, replacing T-stage with tobacco use in patients with T < 4 improved the accuracy of the predictive model.

Summary: The risk factors for dysphagia refractory to a single dilation after TL/TLP include pharyngocutaneous fistula, primary chemoradiation therapy, and a shorter time interval from TL/TLP to first dilation. Patients requiring multiple dilations are at increased risk of persistent dysphagia long-term.

Summary: The study aimed to determine patterns of alaryngeal voice acquisition and predictive factors of vocal rehabilitation (VR) failure following total laryngectomy (TL) at a large Canadian tertiary care center. The data of 197 laryngectomized patients were analyzed, and it was found that successful VR was achieved in 59.0% of patients, while 41.0% failed to adopt an alaryngeal voice as their principal means of communication at 1 year postoperatively. The use of tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) was associated with higher VR success rates compared with the artificial larynx and esophageal voice, and low socioeconomic status was identified as the independent predictor of VR failure.

Summary: The study aimed to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of a new ultrasound-guided technique for DTML-release in a cadaver model. The approach successfully visualized and cut the ligament through a dorsal, minimally invasive surgical incision of only 2 mm, proving to be safer and more effective compared to blind techniques. The results suggest that ultrasound-guided release of the DTML is a reliable method with minimal damage to anatomical structures.

Summary: The Covid-19 pandemic in Spain led to a state of emergency, halting all educational and most university research activities. A study conducted by the Spanish Anatomical Society (SAE) on body donations and dissection activities during the lockdown revealed that Spanish universities rejected body donations and ceased all related research and teaching. The future implications of the pandemic on anatomy teaching include an increase in teaching workforce and resources to implement new safety measures for practical activities, as well as the preparation and adaptation of teaching material for online-only programs.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a global quality management system (DRQS) for Dissection Rooms (DRs) used for teaching and research on human anatomy. A Delphi panel of 20 anatomy professors from 20 different countries was used to achieve consensus on the items that should be included in the DRQS. After two rounds of revisions, 150 standards were considered essential and important, and were incorporated into the DRQS for improving the functioning of DRs globally.
