Summary: Regulating both chirality and nanostructure in supramolecular gel is significant and challenging. In this study, a supramolecular hydrogel system was prepared using a low-molecule-weight-gelator C4AzoGlu in aqueous solution, showing supramolecular chirality and a structure of nanotwists. The transition of supramolecular chirality, morphology, and phase in the system can be realized by photoirradation, providing insights to the chiroptical property and morphology transition.

Summary: Developing a better understanding of the structure-property relationship of mechanochromic luminescent molecules is challenging. In this research, the authors demonstrate the impact of host-guest interactions on the mechanochromic properties of organic molecules. They observe bathochromic-shifted emission in a series of pyridinium-functionalized triphenylamine derivatives upon mechanical stimulation, which form homoternary host-guest inclusion complexes through charge transfer interactions. The study also involves a heteroternary complex that exhibits mechanochromic luminescent property. This work not only uncovers the effect of host-guest inclusion on mechanochromic properties, but also offers a principle and a simple approach to design sequentially red-shifted mechanochromic materials.

Summary: This study introduces a novel self-energized hybrid substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique, utilizing a distinctive piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film and hydrophilic-hydrophobic strategy. By pressing or bending the PVDF film, the enhanced localized electromagnetic field of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) can be rationally induced, leading to tunable ultra-high sensitivity. The quantitative level of detection is further improved by uniformly anchoring and enriching analytes using a facile hydrophilic-hydrophobic strategy.

Summary: In this study, a 4-sulfocalix[4]arene (4-SCA)-modified graphene oxide (GO) membrane was successfully fabricated, which exhibited high ion permeability and selectivity, as well as pH-responsiveness. The membrane preferentially transported potassium ions over radionuclide cations and showed an order of magnitude higher ion selectivity than the unmodified GO membrane. The improved selectivity resulted from the specific recognition between 4-SCA and radionuclide cations, which was responsive to the protonation/deprotonation transformation of 4-SCA. This biomimetic permselective GO membrane has potential applications in efficient nuclear wastewater treatment and contributes to a deeper understanding of biomimetic ion transport mechanisms.

Summary: The physicochemical properties and interactions of the complex of oleic acid (OA) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) were studied using experimental and computational methods. The study confirmed the stability improvement of the OA/beta-CD complex and the formation of hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl group of OA and the beta-CD cavity. This research provides a theoretical basis for the development of nutritional supplements containing unsaturated fatty acids encapsulated by beta-CD.

Summary: Nanochaperones (nChaps) have significant potential in inhibiting protein aggregation and facilitating protein refolding. The interaction between nChaps and proteins is crucial for their chaperone-like functions, but the mechanism of this interaction is still unclear. This study prepares a series of nChaps with tunable hydrophilic-hydrophobic surfaces and systematically explores the process of nChaps-assisted denatured protein refolding. It is found that an appropriate hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance on the nChap surface is critical for enhancing protein renaturation by ensuring optimal interaction between nChap and protein, leading to suitable capture and sufficient release of client proteins. The findings of this work provide valuable insights for the design of nChaps and contribute to their future development.

Summary: A multifunctional self-assembled AuNPs array (MSANA)-based LDI-MS platform was developed for direct amino acids analysis and metabolic profiling in patient CSF samples. The platform demonstrated high selectivity and micromolar sensitivity for capturing and analyzing aromatic amino acids. It also exhibited excellent reproducibility (RSD < 10%) compared to the widely used direct matrix spotting approach (RSD < 44%). The platform was successfully used for metabolic profiling of CSF, enabling the discrimination of medulloblastoma patients from non-tumor controls within minutes. Overall, the MSANA-based LDI-MS platform shows potential clinical values for large-scale metabolic diagnostics and pathogenic mechanism study.
