We studied total Cu content and its distribution in 33 surface soil samples cultivated with vines for variable lengths of time in the Monterrei designation of origin (DO), located in Galicia (NW Spain). The study was focused on the influence of land use changes on soil degradation by effect of Cu accumulation and availability. Total copper concentration in soils ranged from 25 to 272mg kg(-1). The time during which each soil was cultivated with vines was found to affect both the total concentration of copper and its distribution. The average concentration of copper in young vineyards was 64 mg kg(-1), whereas those in old and abandoned vineyards were 100 and 132mgkg(-1), respectively. Copper bound to organic matter and to amorphous inorganic colloids were greater in old and abandoned vineyards, where they accounted for 51 and 52 per cent, respectively, of total copper, than in young vineyards (39 per cent). Copper bound to crystalline Al and Fe colloids accounted for 21, 22 and 12 per cent of total Cu in old, abandoned and young vineyards respectively. The prevalence of Cu bound to the organic fraction reduces the adverse environmental effects of this metal on soil organisms and plants. However, some management practices such as organic matter addition or liming should be implemented in order to delay or avoid soil degradation in young vineyards. For abandoned vineyards, the influence of new land uses on potential Cu mobilisation necessitates careful examination. Copyright (C) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Summary: Nanotechnology has opened a new frontier in the food industry by providing new ways of controlling and structuring products with greater market value, especially in areas such as food processing, preservation, and packaging. Macroalgae have been recognized as a potential source of secondary metabolites, such as phenolic compounds, pigments, and polysaccharides, which can be used for biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs). These biosynthesized metal NPs derived from macroalgae show advantages in terms of cost, production time, and biocompatibility, making them suitable for various applications in the food industry, such as nanoencapsulation, nanocomposites, and biosensors. However, the potential toxicity of metal NPs should be considered, and applicable regulations need to ensure their safe use.

Fatty acids in seed oil of wild and cultivated rosehip (Rosa canina L.) from different locations in Serbia

Jelena Popovic-Djordjevic, Bojana Spirovic-Trifunovic, Ilinka Pecinar, Luiz Fernando Cappa de Oliveira, Durda Krstic, Dragana Mihajlovic, Milica Fotiric Aksic, Jesus Simal-Gandara

Summary: This study evaluated the fatty acid composition of seed oil from wild and cultivated rosehip collected in different locations in Serbia. The results showed that unsaturated fatty acids were dominant in most samples, with linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and oleic acid as the most abundant components. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed significantly higher content of unsaturated fatty acids in two seed samples. Ratios of UFAs/SFAs, omega-6/omega-3, and LA/ALA, as well as desirable fatty acids, indicated good quality in most rosehip seed oils. Genetic characteristics and agro-ecological conditions likely affected the fatty acid composition of seed oils.

Classification, application, multifarious activities and production improvement of lipopeptides produced by Bacillus

Zhimin Wang, Chao Liu, Yingying Shi, Mingming Huang, Zunyang Song, Jesus Simal-Gandara, Ningyang Li, Jingying Shi

Summary: Lipopeptides are compounds produced by Bacillus spp. with a peptide ring and a fatty acid chain. They are widely used in various industries due to their hydrophilic and oleophilic properties. However, the complex metabolic network and strict synthesis pathway of lipopeptides result in high cost and low production efficiency, limiting their large-scale application. This review explores the types and biosynthetic pathways of Bacillus-produced lipopeptides, as well as methods to improve their production, such as genetic engineering and fermentation optimization.

Summary: Liver disease patients, especially those with surgically or spontaneously induced portosystemic shunts, can accumulate toxic substances, including manganese, in the brain, leading to acquired hepatocerebral degeneration (AHD). This study examined the levels of trace elements in AHD patients before and after liver transplantation (LT), finding imbalances in several trace elements and an improvement in neurological symptoms and inflammation after LT. These changes in trace element levels may contribute to the pathophysiology and symptomatology of AHD.

Summary: The present study demonstrated the potential of Chamaerops humilis extracts as food preservatives based on their antifungal, antiaflatoxin, and antioxidant efficacy. Molds isolated from peanuts were identified as Aspergillus, Penicillium sp., Fusarium sp., and Alternaria sp. The extracts effectively inhibited the growth and aflatoxin production of A. flavus at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that C. humilis extracts can be utilized as plant-based preservative food additives.

Challenges for future food systems: From the Green Revolution to food supply chains with a special focus on sustainability

A. Soria-Lopez, P. Garcia-Perez, M. Carpena, P. Garcia-Oliveira, Paz Otero, M. Fraga-Corral, Hui Cao, M. A. Prieto, J. Simal-Gandara

Summary: Finding a sustainable food system to feed the growing global population is a challenge due to the depletion of natural resources. The long food supply chain (LFSC) has shown limitations in feeding the population and has negative ecological, environmental, logistical, and nutritional impacts. Therefore, new efficient food systems, such as the short food supply chain (SFSC), are needed to address current environmental and consumer demands.
