Summary: This study examined changes in mortality rate and disparities among individuals with diabetes in the United States from 1997 to 2011. Significant decreases in mortality rates were observed across different socioeconomic and racial/ethnic groups, but disparities still exist despite efforts to improve access to quality care among affected populations.

Summary: The effects of alcohol intake on kidney function are still debated. This population-based study examined the association between alcohol intake and kidney function and mortality. The findings suggest a positive independent association between alcohol intake and kidney function, with moderate alcohol consumption associated with lower mortality rates.

Summary: This study assessed the burden of GBS disease and mortality in young infants in England, finding that there was no significant change in the annual incidence of GBS disease over the years, but a significant decline in GBS-attributable mortality. Infants with GBS had higher rates of visual impairment, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, and necrotizing enterocolitis compared to those without GBS.

Summary: This article highlights the incidence, outcome, and burden of pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis in older children and adults in rural Gambia. The diseases are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, with many deaths occurring after hospital discharge and most cases being culture negative. Improvements in prevention, diagnosis, inpatient, and follow-up management are urgently needed.

Summary: Overall, the survival of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in a community population in the United States was not significantly different from that of white Minnesota residents. However, individuals with a maximum serum calcium level > 10.8 mg/dL had an increased risk of mortality. Survival was improved after parathyroidectomy in patients with serum calcium levels >10.8 mg/dL.

Summary: Baseline hospitalization, mortality, and in-hospital fatality rates for meningococcal infection in Spain from 1997 to 2018 were analyzed. The hospitalization rate for meningococcal infection significantly decreased over the study period and was highest in children under 5 years of age. Case fatality rate increased with age, with 30% of deaths occurring in children under 5 years of age. Epidemiological surveillance is necessary to evaluate preventive measures for meningococcal infection in all age groups.

Summary: Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLC) accounts for 1-2% of all cases of hepatocellular carcinoma in the USA. The study found a bimodal distribution of FLC, with the highest incidences in the age groups 15-19 years and 70-74 years. Surgical intervention is superior to chemotherapy and radiation, and FLC has a higher recurrence rate but better survival outcome compared to HCC.

The results showed that parenthood has negative effects on lung function, weight, and pulmonary condition in CF patients, but these effects can be mitigated by the use of CFTR modulators. Summary: This study examined the role of sRANKL and OPG in CFBD and their potential utility as biomarkers of bone turnover in CF patients. The findings showed that CFBD patients had higher levels of sRANKL, lower levels of OPG, and higher RANKL/OPG ratio. These findings support the investigation of therapeutic targets for CF bone disease by modulating the RANK/RANKL/OPG pathway.

The results show that SNAP participation moderates the relationship between FV intake among parents and children and FV shopping at convenience stores, indicating the need for interventions to promote SNAP participation and improve access to FV.

Summary: This study found that the comorbidity of eczema with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing. There may be an interaction between eczema and polymorphisms in glutathione S-transferase (GST) genes in relation to ASD and ASD severity. Further analysis showed that eczema was significantly associated with ASD only among children with specific genotypes for the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism. Additionally, among ASD cases with the GSTM1 DD genotype, those with eczema had a marginally significant higher mean social affect score.

Summary: This study examined the association between ethnic discrimination and self-rated health among Hispanic emerging adults, and investigated the role of self-esteem and resilience as moderators of this association. Results revealed that higher levels of ethnic discrimination were linked to lower self-rated health. Self-esteem acted as a moderator that weakened this association, but resilience did not have a similar effect.

Summary: In this study, we found that changes in individual spinal mobility measures over a 2-year period are not reliably associated with increased, longitudinal AS-related spinal structural progression. Moreover, baseline mSASSS, sex, CRP, and disease duration were confirmed to be associated with AS-related structural spinal progression over time.
