Summary: This review evaluated evidence on secondary preventative strategies for HUS associated with STEC infections, finding uncertainty in the effectiveness and safety of interventions to prevent development of HUS in patients with diarrhoea due to STEC infection. Additional studies, including larger multicentre studies, are needed to draw firm conclusions about the efficacy of these interventions.

Summary: This study examined the participation in mammography screening during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark. It was found that there was a reduction in short-term participation at the start of the pandemic, but only a minor overall reduction with longer follow-up time. However, certain groups of women had lower participation, suggesting that social inequity in screening participation was exacerbated during the pandemic.

Summary: The efficacy and safety of whole-blood exchange transfusion (WBE) in combination with glucocorticoids (GCs) and immunosuppressants (ISAs) were investigated in patients with severe refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-associated autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). The results showed that WBE could be a safe and beneficial alternative therapy for these patients.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using wastewater surveillance to detect C. auris in a metropolitan area with reported outbreaks. The results showed a high detection rate of C. auris, reaching 94% in sewersheds serving healthcare facilities involved in the outbreak. Wastewater surveillance can help track the spread of C. auris and serve as an early warning tool for public health action.

Summary: This study investigated the immune response against monkeypox virus in patients with laboratory-confirmed monkeypox. The results showed a reduction in CD4+ T cells and an increase in CD8+ T cells during the early stage of the infection. The patients developed a poxvirus-specific immune response, and inflammatory cytokines remained elevated even after recovery.

Summary: In 2019, Norwegian veterinary authorities conducted an official outbreak investigation to determine the cause of dogs suffering from acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea (AHD). The investigation pointed towards Providencia alcalifaciens as a potential cause, with whole genome sequencing showing the bacterial strains from the affected dogs were almost identical. Further studies are needed to understand the pathogenic potential of P. alcalifaciens in dogs.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, complications, and short-term outcomes of New Zealand children with D+HUS between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2020. The results showed that out of 226 children, 56.2% required acute dialysis, 13.7% had seizures, and 1.3% experienced acute mortality. Therefore, early recognition of STEC infections may help reduce the need for dialysis and other extra-renal complications.

Summary: The study conducted in Denmark found that individuals infected with the B.1.1.7 lineage of SARS-CoV-2 had a higher risk of hospitalisation for COVID-19 compared to those with other lineages. While the overall number of hospitalisations decreased during the study period, the proportion of individuals infected with B.1.1.7 significantly increased. The findings suggest implications for hospital preparedness and understanding the impact of the epidemic in areas with the dominant presence of B.1.1.7.

Summary: Respiratory failure due to COVID-19 pneumonia is associated with high mortality and may overwhelm health care systems. The study found that helmet CPAP treatment was successful in 69% of patients, with significant improvement in gas exchange. Summary: A specific strain of BVDV 2b circulated among Spanish sheep flocks, leading to outbreaks of abortions and malformations. The application of a contaminated MLV orf vaccine to a highly prolific sheep flock resulted in a high rate of abortions, stillbirths, and malformations in the offspring. The presence of the same BVDV 2b strain in the affected lambs and the vaccine indicated the vaccine as the source of the outbreak.

Summary: This study examined the temporal changes in incidence and mortality of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) using nationwide healthcare registries in China. The results showed an increasing trend in ANCA testing and AAV diagnosis during the study period. Furthermore, the mortality and risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) decreased over time, which may be attributed to earlier diagnosis and changes in treatment practice.

Summary: This research found that recurrent moderate hypoglycemia (RH) accelerates the progression of cognitive deficits in patients with diabetes and leads to neuronal hyperactivity and mitochondrial dysfunction. The study also found that enhancing glucose uptake mediated by glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) and activating the transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6) can improve cognitive deficits.

Summary: The study found that patients with chronic kidney disease and their families require early advance care planning to facilitate shared decision-making related to treatment options and everyday life. Healthcare professionals should take responsibility for initiating advance care planning. Differences in advance care planning goals among patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals may complicate the planning process.

Summary: The characterization of potential kidney transplant recipients using novel biomarkers can lead to improved outcomes after transplantation. This mini-review focuses on the current understanding of pretransplant recipients' characteristics, biomarkers, and immunology. Clinical characteristics and immunological risk assessment, such as histocompatibility leukocyte antigens (HLAs) and non-HLA antibodies, have been used to predict recipient and allograft survival. Recent studies have shown that pretransplant markers, such as plasma endotrophin levels and non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphism mismatch, are associated with posttransplant complications and allograft loss. Integrating clinical characteristics and novel markers is important for making better diagnostic decisions tailored to individual patients.

Summary: This study found a strong association between plasma endotrophin and graft failure and mortality in kidney transplant recipients. The findings suggest that abnormal extracellular matrix turnover and fibrosis play a key role in the prognosis of kidney transplant recipients and highlight the need for interventional studies targeting the profibrotic state of these patients.

Summary: This study evaluated endotrophin (ETP) as a prognostic marker in kidney transplant recipients. It found that ETP levels in the blood on the first day after transplantation were strongly associated with delayed graft function, while ETP levels in the urine at the third month after transplantation were significantly correlated with kidney graft function at twelve months. The measurement of collagen type VI formation could aid in predicting graft function in kidney transplant recipients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Danish nephrology healthcare professionals towards advance care planning (ACP) and the current status of ACP practice in Denmark. The results showed that the majority of professionals lacked access to ACP materials for chronic kidney disease patients and reported that ACP conversations were performed ad hoc. Time, lack of experience, and procedure were reported as barriers to ACP implementation. Training in ACP on both theoretical and clinical levels is crucial to improve professionals' comfort and involvement in ACP.

Summary: FOXP3 is a crucial protein for the development and function of T cells, and its splicing isoforms have different effects on T cell differentiation and suppressive function. The balance of FOXP3 isoforms is related to various diseases, and the regulation of energy metabolism and signaling pathways can affect FOXP3 transcription and splicing. Therefore, targeting FOXP3 splicing isoforms in Tregs may provide potential approaches for the treatment of certain diseases.
