Assessing the effect of COVID-19 stay-at -home orders on firearm injury in Maryland

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the frequency and demographic characteristics of firearm injury and penetrating trauma in Maryland during the first year of the pandemic compared to the three years prior. The study found no significant overall change in the frequency or demographics of firearm injury or penetrating trauma in the year after stay-at-home orders were issued. However, young people aged 15 to 24, predominantly male, and Black non-Hispanic youth in urban environments and children from low socioeconomic backgrounds continue to be at high risk for firearm injuries. The study also found a significant increase in unintentional firearm injuries among adults during the pandemic.

Assessing effective mask use by the public in two countries: an observational study

Summary: This study observed mask usage in 11 public settings in Toronto and Portland, finding that mandatory mask-use settings led to a significant increase in mask-wearing. Despite 14% of people wearing masks incorrectly, mask users had a significant reduction in the average number of breaches of social distancing. Recommendations include interventions aimed at improving mask use for the elderly and public transit users.

Using routine healthcare data to determine the factors associated with hospital length of stay for hypertensive inpatients in Ghana, 2012-2017

Summary: Hospitalisation duration for hypertension in Ghana varies from 1 to 91 days. This retrospective study analyzed health data from 2012 to 2017 and found that the median length of stay was 3 days, with majority of patients being discharged within 10 days. Female patients were discharged earlier than male patients, while patients in Volta and Eastern regions experienced late discharge. Surgical intervention and comorbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases other than hypertension increased the length of stay.

Assessing the Electronic Evidence System Needs of Canadian Public Health Professionals: Cross-sectional Study

Assessing variation among the national essential medicines lists of 21 high-income countries: a cross-sectional study

Summary: Essential medicines lists of high-income countries are similar to each other, but significant variations in essential medicine list composition and specifically the number of medications included were noted. Effective medicines were left off several countries' lists, and globally recalled medicines were included on over half the lists. Comparing the essential medicines lists of countries within the same income status category can provide a useful subset of lists for policymakers and essential medicine list creators to use when creating or maintaining their lists.

Towards a global framework for assessing male involvement in maternal health: results of an international Delphi study

Assessing the potential cost-effectiveness of centralised versus point-of-care testing for hepatitis C virus in Pakistan: a model-based comparison

Summary: Pakistan aims to eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 2030 and this study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of using a reference laboratory-based approach versus a molecular near-patient point-of-care approach to screen for HCV in the general population. The results show that the reference laboratory-based approach provides better value for money and identifies more HCV infections when scaling up testing in Pakistan.

Existing tools for assessing quality of care for children in health facilities are lacking some key elements highlighted by the WHO Standards, and there is a need to modify these tools to strengthen progress reporting towards delivering quality health services for children. Balancing between comprehensiveness and practical utility is necessary in this process.

Personal exposure monitoring of PM2.5 among US diplomats in Kathmandu during the COVID-19 lockdown, March to June 2020

Summary: The lockdown order issued by the government of Nepal in the Kathmandu Valley from 24 March to 11 June 2020 significantly reduced the concentration of ambient PM2.5. Monitoring of four American diplomats during the lockdown found a significant decrease in personal exposure to PM2.5 compared to before the lockdown.
