Summary: This study reviewed the effectiveness and safety of pramipexole augmentation in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression. The results showed that pramipexole augmentation had a treatment response rate of 62.5% for both unipolar and bipolar depression, with good safety. However, further confirmation is needed.

Summary: Accelerated intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) protocol of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in a real-world six-patient population with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) did not show significant effect, indicating further studies on larger samples are needed to fully understand its potential.

Summary: The study developed a new measure for identifying bipolar disorder, comparing the classification accuracy of a weighting rating scale with equivalent weightings for each item. Results showed that both methods had extremely high classificatory accuracy, and identified optimal cut-off scores for diagnosis.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of acute intravenous ketamine treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and explored the peripheral blood-based biomarkers associated with treatment response. The results showed that ketamine significantly improved depressive symptoms and was well tolerated. In addition, baseline BDNF levels were found to be predictive of treatment response to ketamine.

Summary: Recent studies compare psychomotor reactivity disorders and gait activity in unipolar and bipolar depression, and find significant differences among the three groups. Bipolar patients exhibit more inhibited psychomotor skills than unipolar patients and healthy controls. The simplified variant of the equilibriometric task is the most sensitive and psychomotor reactivity is a more precise marker than psychomotor activity. These findings are important for distinguishing similar psychiatric conditions and developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate differences in facial emotion recognition among patients with UD, BD, and normal controls. It found that UD patients performed poorly in recognizing negative expressions and had longer recognition times, while BD patients had lower accuracy in recognizing positive expressions and longer recognition times. Rapid facial expression recognition may serve as a potential endophenotype for early identification of unipolar and BD.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal symptoms and non-enzymatic oxidative stress in first hospitalized patients with bipolar and unipolar depression, aiming to differentiate between the two disorders and reduce misdiagnosis. The study finds that patients with bipolar depression have distinct seasonal characteristics compared to those with unipolar depression. Clinical symptoms and indicators of oxidative stress may serve as factors for distinguishing between seasonal unipolar depression and bipolar depression. Young individuals aged 15-35 are more likely to develop bipolar depression in winter.

Summary: This study investigated the neural oscillation patterns and cognitive impairments in patients with unipolar depression (UD) and bipolar depression (BD) using magnetoencephalography (MEG). The results showed that BD patients had more severe cognitive impairments in different dimensions compared to UD patients, and these impairments were associated with disrupted beta power modulations.

Summary: This study conducted a retrospective analysis of symptomatic worsening rates during IV ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression in patients with unipolar and bipolar TRD. The findings suggest that the rates of symptomatic worsening associated with IV ketamine therapy for TRD are very low and similar to conventional antidepressants.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of anxiety and depression in a national sample of young physicians and their associated factors. The results showed that almost one third of medical students suffered from anxiety disorder or major depression, and less than one fifth of them received the recommended treatment. The study also identified moral harassment, alcohol and coffee consumption, and poor quality of initial training in dealing with disease as modifiable factors associated with poor mental health. These findings are important for improving the prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders among medical students.

Summary: Psychiatric patients are at risk of vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19-related mortality. Vitamin D supplementation, in addition to its mental health benefits, may be effective in preventing severe forms of Covid-19 infections. However, it is currently not considered necessary and is not reimbursed for this purpose in France. A monthly dose of 50,000 IU may be sufficient for most cases, with double the dose recommended for obese patients. The risk of kidney stones is not increased at these doses, even in patients without vitamin D deficiency. The Covid-19 crisis provides an opportunity to promote vitamin D supplementation in psychiatric patients, as it has been shown to be effective in other respiratory diseases.

Summary: Motivation deficits are common in individuals with schizophrenia and are associated with impaired functioning and quality of life. Factors such as alcohol use disorder, severe nicotine dependence, history of suicide attempt, positive symptoms, current major depressive episode, sleep disorders, and lower medication adherence contribute to motivation deficits in schizophrenia.

Summary: This study aimed to calibrate an item bank to measure patients' experience of drug therapy for adult patients with SMIs and develop computerized adaptive testing to improve its use in routine practice. The resulting item bank showed strong psychometric properties and the use of computerized adaptive testing facilitated widespread use in clinical settings. Practical information and information about the side effects of psychotropic treatments and how to cope with them should be targeted as a priority to improve patients' experience of drug therapy.
