Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) by altering motility, gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, and increasing oxidative stress. This study investigates the changes in colonic glial markers, inflammation, and antioxidant parameters in CKD. The findings show that CKD animals display abnormalities in colonic cytoarchitecture, reduced antioxidant activity, and increased inflammation in the enteric glial network of the neuromuscular layer.

Summary: This study reveals that the upregulation of KLF15 and IL-6, as well as the decrease in intracellular Ca2+ concentration, are involved in muscle atrophy induced by immobility. This finding has been validated in both mouse models and human samples.

Summary: The study demonstrated that HDHW inhibits autophagy by up-regulating IGF-1 expression, promoting the binding of IGF-1 to IGF-1R, and activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, thereby reducing renal fibrosis and protecting renal function.

Summary: The study demonstrated that resistance exercise training can improve chronic kidney disease outcomes and enhance renal and muscular signaling pathways. RET appears to be an effective non-pharmacological approach for alleviating complications in CKD, with the AKT-mTOR pathway playing a significant role in these beneficial effects.

Summary: This study demonstrated that CKD can induce anxiogenic behaviors and depression, with altered hippocampal neural oscillations in CKD rat models. CKD rats showed elevated levels of alpha-SMA and collagen I in renal tissue, leading to worsening fibrosis. Anxiety and depression-like behaviors increased as the CKD onset was prolonged, with increased power in delta, theta, and alpha rhythm in the hippocampus of CKD rats.

Summary: The study suggests that N-GSDME is significantly elevated in CKD models, and deletion of GSDME helps alleviate renal fibrosis and inflammation, improving kidney function. These results indicate that the activation of GSDME is critical in regulating renal fibrosis and kidney dysfunction, possibly through promoting inflammatory responses in CKD.

Summary: Five aromatic ergosterols with unique ring systems, named spectasterols A-E (1-5), were isolated from Aspergillus spectabilis. Compound 3 demonstrated cytotoxic activity and anti-inflammatory effects, inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HL60 cells, and inhibiting COX-2 levels and NF-kappa B p65 nuclear translocation.

Summary: The major metabolic fate of uniformly-C-13-labeled alpha-ketoisovalerate in the heart is reamination to valine. Activation of cardiac branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase by treatment with the BCKDH kinase inhibitor, BT2, does not impede the strong flux of alpha-ketoisovalerate to valine. Moreover, exposure to levels of BCKA found in obese rats increases cardiac protein synthesis and alters the heart phosphoproteome.

Summary: C57BL/6 mice are known to be resistant to CKD induced by 5/6-Nx, but feeding them a calcium- and phosphate enriched diet (CPD) partially overcomes this resistance, resulting in worsening CKD development, cardiac and skeletal consequences, as well as a significant increase in FGF23 levels.

Summary: Neurological disorders are common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and vascular factors and uremic toxins are involved in cognitive impairment. However, the pathophysiology of cognitive impairment in CKD patients is not fully understood. This study used rat models to observe the changes in behavior, synaptic plasticity, and immunostaining of the hippocampus during CKD progression. The results suggest that CKD can lead to deficits in cognitive function and alterations in the hippocampus.

Summary: This study identified a strain of Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum KCCM 11826P that has better phosphorus absorption ability and can suppress indole production. Supplementation with this strain significantly reduced serum phosphate levels and blood indoxyl sulphate concentration in 5/6 nephrectomized rats.

Summary: This study investigated the renoprotective effects of exosomes derived from rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) in a rat model of 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx)-induced chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that transplantation of rBMSC-derived exosomes reduced urinary protein excretion, serum creatinine (SCr), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in CKD rats. Renal pathology was also improved in the exosome-treated rats. Mechanistically, the exosomes upregulated the activity and expression of klotho. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the application of rBMSC-derived exosomes in CKD therapy.

Summary: Empagliflozin treatment significantly reduced BUN, creatinine, urinary albumin excretion, renal interstitial fibrosis, and glomerulosclerosis. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed CD206+CD68+ M2 macrophages highly expressed fibrosis-promoting genes, and Empagliflozin inhibited their polarization by affecting mitophagy and mTOR pathways.

Summary: COVID-19 patients often experience acute kidney injury (AKI), which is associated with mortality and severity. However, the role of kidney dysfunction in COVID-19 is still debated. This retrospective study investigated the impact of kidney dysfunction on COVID-19 severity and mortality in a cohort of hospitalized patients. The study also examined the relationship between kidney function, age, and COVID-19 progression, using different equations to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Logistic regressions and predictive analysis were performed, and accurate predictions for AKI and mortality were achieved.
