Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of emotional freedom therapy (EFT) in improving sleep quality and managing negative emotions in end-stage renal disease patients on maintenance hemodialysis. A 12-week intervention of EFT was performed on the intervention group, while the control group received no intervention. The results showed that EFT can relieve anxiety and depression, enhance sleep quality, and improve the physical condition of patients. Most participants found EFT easy to schedule and did not experience difficulties during the learning process. They were also willing to continue practicing EFT. Qualitative analysis identified five categories related to feasibility and acceptability: affirmation, benefits, communication, support, and trust.

Summary: In-center hemodialysis (HD) can lead to a significant symptom burden and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The effects of converting to in-center nocturnal hemodialysis (INHD) on HRQOL are unclear, particularly for those with poor HRQOL. A prospective cohort study showed that INHD could improve mental health components and symptoms/problems of kidney disease for patients with low baseline HRQOL. Improved phosphate control and reduced pill burden are additional medical benefits of transitioning to INHD.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease and cardiac insufficiency often co-exist, especially in uremic patients on hemodialysis. Impaired renal function is often indicative of poor prognosis in patients with cardiac insufficiency. Inflammation plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease and is indicative of prognosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of hemodialysis on functional brain connectivity in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The study found significant changes in functional brain connectivity measures between the pre- and post-hemodialysis periods, but no changes between the pre- and mid-hemodialysis periods or between the mid- and post-hemodialysis periods. These findings suggest that hemodialysis has a significant effect on functional brain connectivity in patients with ESRD.

Summary: Major depression (MD) is prevalent in patients with heart failure (HF) and implementation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has become a key strategy for treatment. In this study, 6 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive CBT compared to standard of care (SOC) in HF patients with MD. CBT was found to significantly improve depression scores and quality of life (QoL) in HF patients, but did not significantly impact self-care scores or 6-minute walk test distance (6-MW).

Summary: Hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 in Brazil had an 18.8% mortality rate, with 44.9% requiring hospitalization and 28.5% admitted to an intensive care unit. The cumulative probability of survival at 90 days of diagnosis was 79%. Risk factors significantly associated with death included diabetes, central venous catheter use, older age, and origin from the North region.

Summary: The present study investigated the association between food addiction (FA), BMI/age z-score changes, and consumption of ultra-processed foods in overweight students. The results showed that FA influenced weight maintenance during the intervention, and weight loss was observed only in individuals without FA. Additionally, the consumption of sugary milk-based drinks decreased in non-FA students after the intervention. This study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing food addiction for the prevention and management of obesity.

Summary: Sex-specific differences in clinical outcomes among individuals with CKD were analyzed. More men than women started kidney replacement therapy (KRT), with higher rates of dialysis initiation and transplantation. This finding suggests factors other than CKD progression contribute to the preponderance of men in the dialysis population.

Summary: The prevalence and sociodemographic determinants of predialysis dietitian follow-up were evaluated in a large cohort of Brazilian dialysis patients. Retrospective data from all incident adult dialysis patients included in the Brazilian Dialysis Registry were analyzed. The study found that only 12.1% of patients reported predialysis dietitian follow-up, with the majority being referred by a nephrologist. Older age, white skin color, higher education level, absence of diabetes, residing in North/Northeast and South regions, and having a nonpublic healthcare provider were associated with dietitian follow-up.
