Depression is an important target of psychological assessment in patients with end-stage renal disease because it predicts their morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. We assessed the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in chronic hemodialysis patients diagnosed with major depression by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). In a randomized trial conducted in Brazil, an intervention group of 41 patients was given 12 weekly sessions of cognitive-behavioral group therapy led by a trained psychologist over 3 months while a control group of 44 patients received the usual treatment offered in the dialysis unit. In both groups, the Beck Depression Inventory, the MINI, and the Kidney Disease and Quality of Life-Short Form questionnaires were administered at baseline, after 3 months of intervention or usual treatment, and after 9 months of follow-up. The intervention group had significant improvements, compared to the control group, in the average scores of the Beck Depression Inventory overall scale, MINI scores, and in quality-of-life dimensions that included the burden of renal disease, sleep, quality of social interaction, overall health, and the mental component summary. We conclude that cognitive-behavioral group therapy is an effective treatment of depression in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Evaluation of central venous catheter and other risk factors for mortality in chronic hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 in Brazil

Jocemir Ronaldo Lugon, Precil Diego Miranda de Menezes Neves, Andrea Pio-Abreu, Marcelo Mazza do Nascimento, Ricardo Sesso

Summary: Hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 in Brazil had an 18.8% mortality rate, with 44.9% requiring hospitalization and 28.5% admitted to an intensive care unit. The cumulative probability of survival at 90 days of diagnosis was 79%. Risk factors significantly associated with death included diabetes, central venous catheter use, older age, and origin from the North region.

The impact of food addiction behaviours on the treatment of overweight students

Viviane Bellucci Pires de Almeida, Andrea Rocha Filgueiras, Paulo Cesar Koch Nogueira, Ricardo Cintra Sesso, Ana Lydia Sawaya, Semiramis Martins Alvares Domene

Summary: The present study investigated the association between food addiction (FA), BMI/age z-score changes, and consumption of ultra-processed foods in overweight students. The results showed that FA influenced weight maintenance during the intervention, and weight loss was observed only in individuals without FA. Additionally, the consumption of sugary milk-based drinks decreased in non-FA students after the intervention. This study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing food addiction for the prevention and management of obesity.

Summary: The study analyzed the 30-day Covid-19-associated case-fatality rate of dialysis and kidney transplant patients, finding that transplant patients had a lower death risk at baseline but a higher risk over time compared to dialysis patients.

Sex-Specific Differences in Mortality and Incident Dialysis in the Chronic Kidney Disease Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study

Summary: Sex-specific differences in clinical outcomes among individuals with CKD were analyzed. More men than women started kidney replacement therapy (KRT), with higher rates of dialysis initiation and transplantation. This finding suggests factors other than CKD progression contribute to the preponderance of men in the dialysis population.

Summary: This article reports epidemiological data from the 2020 Brazilian Dialysis Survey. The survey found that the number of patients on chronic dialysis and the incidence rate continued to increase, while the use of peritoneal dialysis remained low and the use of long-term catheters increased among hemodialysis patients. The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the overall mortality rate.

Prevalence and Determinants of Predialysis Dietitian Follow-Up: Results From the Brazilian Dialysis Registry

Fabiana Baggio Nerbass, Helbert do Nascimento Lima, Osvaldo Merege Vieira Neto, Ricardo Sesso, Jocemir Ronaldo Lugon

Summary: The prevalence and sociodemographic determinants of predialysis dietitian follow-up were evaluated in a large cohort of Brazilian dialysis patients. Retrospective data from all incident adult dialysis patients included in the Brazilian Dialysis Registry were analyzed. The study found that only 12.1% of patients reported predialysis dietitian follow-up, with the majority being referred by a nephrologist. Older age, white skin color, higher education level, absence of diabetes, residing in North/Northeast and South regions, and having a nonpublic healthcare provider were associated with dietitian follow-up.
