Summary: This study assessed the rate of HBV virological response in HIV/HBV co-infected patients on HBV-active ART in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and analyzed factors associated with persistent HBV viraemia. The findings showed a high proportion of patients on HBV-active ART were unsuppressed, which will have an impact on global elimination goals. Better monitoring and early HBV drug-resistance testing should be implemented.

Summary: This study found that individuals coinfected with viral hepatitis were less likely to stay on antiretroviral treatment (ART) compared to HIV monoinfected individuals. The low retention rate in the coinfected group may impact the long-term survival success of people living with HIV. More efforts are needed to retain coinfected individuals in long-term ART care, at least to the level of monoinfected persons. Future studies should focus on better understanding the retention differences, preferably in a prospective manner.

Summary: This study in Turkish HIV-positive patients found a prevalence of 1.4% for occult hepatitis B infection (OHBI), with no significant differences in hematology, hemoglobin, or bilirubin concentrations in patients with OHBI compared to others. Identifying those with OHBI is important for optimal clinical management and prognosis in HIV-infected individuals.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among people living with HIV (PLWH) in the Amazon region. The study found a low prevalence of HCV infection and identified the presence of HCV genotype 2 for the first time among PLWH in the area.

Summary: We report a case of occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) reactivation in a HIV/HCV co-infected patient who was followed for 25 years but lost to follow-up after Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) treatment. The patient showed severe immunosuppression and high replication of plasmatic HIV-RNA, followed by an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) with detectable HBV-DNA load and transaminase elevation after ART reintroduction. This case highlights the importance of closely monitoring HBV serological and virological markers in individuals with impaired immune systems, especially in patients on tenofovir or lamivudine-sparing regimens.

Summary: Coinfection with HIV and HBV is common and can lead to accelerated disease progression. Combination antiretroviral therapy containing dual anti-HBV drugs is recommended for individuals coinfected with HIV/HBV. While some drugs have been approved for the treatment of HIV and also have anti-HBV activity, there are still limitations such as drug resistance and side effects.

Summary: The study showed differential expression of miRNAs and cellular factors in ECs compared to other patient groups, with some miRNAs and cellular factors serving as potential biomarkers for discriminating ECs and other infected groups. There was also significant correlation between certain miRNAs and cellular factors/the viral load, indicating their role in viral replication control and immune response modulation.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of HIV/HBV coinfection in Spain was 3.2% by the end of 2018, remaining stable at around 3% for the past decade. Most coinfected patients were receiving treatment for HBV, and a portion of them also tested positive for hepatitis D virus infection.

Summary: HIV and HBV coinfection is a serious public health challenge, with approximately 4 million patients worldwide. The disease progression is more rapid and the risk of liver complications is higher in coinfected patients. In this study, a graph neural network-based model was proposed to accurately predict the potential multitargets of HIV-1/HBV coinfections, using computer-aided drug design techniques.

Summary: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) coinfection with hepatitis B increases the risk of liver cancer, cirrhosis, and death compared to hepatitis B monoinfection. Accurate estimates of HDV prevalence are needed to effectively identify coinfected individuals. Implementing double reflex testing, including anti-HDV testing and HDV RNA testing, is the most effective method to generate estimates and identify undiagnosed individuals. This strategy is feasible and requires a relatively low number of tests.

Summary: Limited information is available on perinatal outcomes of HIV-hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection. Women coinfected with HIV and HBV, especially with high HBV viral loads, are at increased risk of low birth weight and potentially HIV perinatal transmission.

Summary: In the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, researchers found that 27% of HIV-suppressed individuals with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection had HBV replication after two years on tenofovir. However, 77% of them were able to achieve suppression thereafter. Self-reported adherence to therapy and HBV viral load at tenofovir initiation were identified as predictors of persistent replication.

Summary: This article aims to study the overlapping epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV infection and reveal the correlation between HCV and HIV infection and its impact on health. The study found a high prevalence of HCV-HIV coinfection in the population, with HCV diagnosis often preceding HIV detection. Therefore, establishing robust surveillance systems is crucial for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HCV and HIV infections.
