Summary: The aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the efficacy of extended dose of preoperative antibiotics to reduce infectious risk in patients undergoing PCNL. The results showed that one week of prophylactic oral antibiotics can reduce the risk of developing SIRS/sepsis and decrease the positive rate of intraoperative urine and stone culture.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between low socioeconomic status (SES) and larger, more complex kidney stones requiring staged surgical interventions. The results showed that underinsured patients with Medicaid and Medicare insurance types had a significantly higher likelihood of undergoing multiple surgeries within one year.

Summary: People with learning disabilities face significant challenges in accessing healthcare, leading to worse health outcomes and shorter life expectancy. The Equality Act requires reasonable adjustments to be made to mitigate these disadvantages. This article describes the reasonable adjustments that can be made to improve the admission process for adult surgical patients with learning disabilities. These changes can benefit not only this specific group, but also those who lack capacity and struggle to access healthcare.

Summary: Machine learning models can accurately predict operative mortality risk in cardiac surgeries without established risk scores. This study highlights the importance of using local institutional data to train prediction models that account for institution-specific practices.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of non-surgical and surgical procedures is crucial for minimizing complications and maximizing the benefits for patients. Individuals with darker skin and high Fitzpatrick phototype are more susceptible to pigmentation disorders, which may be treated or arise as a complication of aesthetic procedures. A group of experts in cosmetic surgery and dermatology reviewed literature and provided practical recommendations for optimizing outcomes and supporting skincare before, during, and after procedures. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, supportive skincare, and adjunctive skincare with healing and anti-inflammatory properties are key in preventing and improving pigmentation disorders.

Summary: The study revealed that Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli, were the main pathogens causing UTI in patients with urinary calculi. Gender and age, specifically being female and aged ≥60, may be risk factors for UTI complicating urinary calculi. Rational selection of antibiotics based on pathogenic bacteria's drug resistance patterns is crucial in clinical anti-infection management.

Summary: A comparative analysis of guidelines from the American Urological Association, Canadian Urological Association, European Association of Urology, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and Urological Association of Asia revealed high consensus in medical management of stones. While there is consensus in surgical management of ureteral stones, there are some differences in the treatment of renal stones among the guidelines.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the clinical and surgical characteristics of giant stones of the urinary bladder (GSBs) and identify their predictors. The results showed that solitary, rough surface stones and the presence of ureteral stones were independent risk factors for long-standing irritative lower urinary tract symptoms (iLUTS). Stone size and severity of iLUTS were independent predictors of adherence of GSBs to the bladder mucosa. Cystolithotomy is the main treatment, but it may be more difficult when there is bladder mucosa adherence.

Summary: For patients undergoing surgical treatment for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma (UTUC), there is often discordance between pre-operative biopsy and final pathology, with pathological stage and grade, lymphovascular invasion, and lymph node metastases being predictors of prognosis. Adjuvant chemotherapy can provide a significant survival benefit in certain cases.
