EBV causes B lymphomas and undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Although the mechanisms by which EBV infects B lymphocytes have been extensively studied, investigation of the mechanisms by which EBV infects nasopharyngeal epithelial cells (NPECs) has only recently been enabled by the successful growth of B lymphoma Mo-MLV insertion region 1 homolog (BMI1)-immortalized NPECs in vitro and the discovery that neuropilin 1 expression positively affects EBV glycoprotein B (gB)-mediated infection and tyrosine kinase activations in enhancing EBV infection of BMI1-immortalized NPECs. We have now found that even though EBV infected NPECs grown as a monolayer at extremely low efficiency (<3%), close to 30% of NPECs grown as sphere-like cells (SLCs) were infected by EBV. We also identified nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIA (NMHC-IIA) as another NPEC protein important for efficient EBV infection. EBV gH/gL specifically interacted with NMHC-IIA both in vitro and in vivo. NMHC-IIA densely aggregated on the surface of NPEC SLCs and colocalized with EBV. EBV infection of NPEC SLCs was significantly reduced by NMHC-IIA siRNA knock-down. NMHC-IIA antisera also efficiently blocked EBV infection. These data indicate that NMHC-IIA is an important factor for EBV NPEC infection.

Magnetic field assisted electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction of nickel-based materials

Yuanyuan Zhang, Ping Guo, Siwei Li, Jianmin Sun, Wei Wang, Bo Song, Xiaoxuan Yang, Xianjie Wang, Zaixing Jiang, Gang Wu, Ping Xu

Summary: The study reveals that the magnetoresistance effect caused by spin electron scattering dominates the apparent electrocatalytic activity in the magnetic field-assisted oxygen evolution reaction process. Additionally, the magnetic field-induced spin-polarized kinetics are more distinct when the first electron transfer step is the rate-determining step of the OER, especially for nickel. These findings provide insights into the role of magnetic effects in electrochemical reactions and may aid in the rational design of magnetic effect catalysts.

Understanding the Anion Effect of Basic Cobalt Salts for the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Ranran Liang, Bin Zhang, Yunchen Du, Xijiang Han, Siwei Li, Ping Xu

Summary: A series of Co(OH)(x)(A)(y) materials with different acidic anions were synthesized and their catalytic activity for the OER was determined. Surface oxidation and the content of highly active Co(IV) were found to be crucial parameters for the OER performance. Furthermore, the leaching ability of anions in Co(OH)(x)(A)(y) was directly related to the Co(IV) content and the catalytic activity, which can be summarized as an anion leaching-metal oxidation model. This study provides deep insights into the anion effect of metal basic salt-based OER catalysts and the activation process of pre-catalysts for the OER.

Crystalline phase induced Raman enhancement on molybdenum carbides

Mengxin Chen, Chuqiao Song, Ce Liang, Bin Zhang, Yanchun Sun, Siwei Li, Lili Lin, Ping Xu

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the crystalline phase induced Raman enhancement on molybdenum carbide materials (beta-Mo2C and alpha-MoC), with the Raman enhancement on beta-Mo2C being 2-4 times higher than that on alpha-MoC. Spectroscopic and theoretical calculations reveal that beta-Mo2C has a lower electron work function and a higher density of states near the Fermi level than alpha-MoC, promoting charge transfer and photo induced charge transfer processes between probe molecules and the substrate.
