Summary: The new RAFIS scale has good internal consistency and test-retest reliability, distinguishing the severity of incontinence but not the etiology. It shows a moderate-high correlation with reference scales and moderate sensitivity to change compared to the Wexner Score. The scale can differentiate between mild and moderate-severe impact on QoL and has no correlation with the presence of an anal sphincter defect or sphincter hypotonia.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the QUALAS-A into Korean and validate a Korean-modified version of the QUALAS for Young Adults (QUALAS-YA-Km). The results showed that the QUALAS-YA-Km, developed with consideration of Korea's cultural characteristics, is a convenient and reliable instrument with good internal consistency, stability, and construct validity. It can be a useful tool in clinical and research settings for optimizing health-related quality of life in young adults with spina bifida (SB).

Summary: The purpose of this study was to translate and adapt the QUAlity of Life Assessment in Spina bifida for Children (QUALAS-C) into Korean, and validate the Korean version (QUALAS-C-K). The study involved translating the QUALAS-C into Korean, assessing validity, and conducting various tests to assess reliability and validity. The results showed that the QUALAS-C-K is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the health-related quality of life of children with spina bifida in Korea. The study highlights the importance of health-related quality of life assessment and provides a useful tool for clinical practice and research.

Summary: This study found that major low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) following low anterior resection surgery significantly impacts the quality of life. However, there is a lack of awareness among clinicians and patients regarding LARS, and treatment rates for LARS are low. This highlights the importance of long-term follow-up, improved education, and ongoing symptom assessment to enhance the treatment of major LARS.

Summary: Background and purpose: The GIQLI is a validated tool for assessing QOL in upper and lower GI tract diseases. This literature review aims to evaluate its use in patients with benign colorectal diseases. Methods: A literature search was conducted to collect GIQLI data on benign colorectal diseases. Results: Out of 122 reports, 27 studies with a total of 5664 patients were selected for analysis. The median GIQLI score for all studies was 88, indicating a significant reduction in QOL for patients. Conclusions: Benign colorectal diseases significantly impact patients' QOL, as evidenced by GIQLI scores, allowing for comparisons with other studies.

Summary: Spinal dysraphism refers to the herniation of meninges or neural elements through defective neural arch, categorized into open and closed types. MRI is the preferred imaging modality for evaluating severity, with surgery aiming to untether neural structures and reconstruct dura. Accurate depiction of abnormal anatomy is crucial for surgical management.

Summary: A newborn with congenital clubfeet in utero was born with a human tail. Clinical examination revealed a pigmented stain and a pilonidal dimple above the tail. MRI of the spine showed occult spinal dysraphism, a tethered cord caused by an intradural lipoma and a hydrosyringomyelic cavity. The patient underwent surgery to excise the intradural lipoma and the human tail.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess whether the LARS score could provide additional unique information to the Wexner score when assessing fecal incontinence in women with previous obstetric injury. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, and the results showed that the LARS score provided extra relevant information when assessing fecal incontinence in these women. The authors suggest using a combination of LARS and Wexner scores for assessment in this population.

Summary: This study evaluates the prevalence of urinary and fecal incontinence and its impact on the quality of life in adolescent and adult patients with cloacal exstrophy in Germany. The findings show high long-term incontinence rates and reduced quality of life related to incontinence. However, the type of incontinence, urinary diversion, and method of bowel emptying have minimal influence on the quality of life.
